Generalizations abound in Romani studies, and this is reflected in assessments of the relationshi... more Generalizations abound in Romani studies, and this is reflected in assessments of the relationship between Roma and members of the surrounding society. In this article I examine that relationship in a Slovak town where Roma have managed to gain recognition as autochthons with corresponding residential rights. I argue that this basic acknowledgement of Roma as locals is linked to a specific type of integration where ethnicity is de-politicized and domesticated. The ethnohistorical account covers most of the twentieth century, and it provides insight into local-level politics through archival data and oral accounts.
