Romping with the Mind of God This is not a movie review, even though I did see the recent release of The Great Gatsby. I was curious to see how Baz Luhrmann would direct this adaptation of the great American novel. I came away with a new appreciation of the metaphysical aspects of this allegory of a man's search for meaning and how he found success in attaining his singular dream. The Green Light. Situated at the end of Daisy's East Egg dock and barely visible from Gatsby's West Egg lawn, the green light represents Gatsby's hopes and dreams for the future. Gatsby associates it with Daisy, and in Chapter 1 he reaches toward it in the darkness as a guiding light to lead him to his goal.

"You've always had that green light that burns all night at the end of your dock" (Fitzgerald 92). Green symbolizes Gatsby's desire to go and get Daisy.

The green light is described as ‘minute and far away’ which makes it appear impossible to reach. This proves to be true for Gatsby. The green light also represents society’s desire and the seeming impossibility of achieving the American Dream.
