Stone town

Stone Town is the cultural heart of the island and the old city area of Zanzibar City, located on the western shore. The city got its name from the many big multistory buildings made of stone which form the landscape of the old town part.

Z stands for Zanzibar! The very name conjures up exotic images of sultans, spices and slaves. And when you get there, the reality does not disappoint. To spend a day in Zanzibar Town, known as Stone Town, is to be plunged into a time warp. Wandering through the narrow streets I felt as though I was in the heart of some ancient Arab town. Historic Stone Town #Zanzibar - a historic trade center with Swahili and Islamic influences. Its winding lanes present minarets, carved doorways and 19th-century landmarks such as the House of Wonders, a former sultan’s palace.
