Things to note: 1. Warm in the microwave for no more than 30 seconds at a time 2. I used @colour.mill Black food colouring so I don’t know how this will turn out with other brands of black food colouring 3. It’s important to make your black buttercream at least a day before so it has time to develop. The longer you let the black buttercream sit out, the more the colour deepens! Few simple ways can achieve a very dark colour (not just black!) with less dye- 1)Microwaving the black buttercream naturally richens the colour to atleast twice (if not more) its normal strength. 2) Leave to rest overnight. Longer you leave a dark colour, the deeper the colour gets. 3) Use gel colour. After trying several options, I find @sugarflaircoloursltd black extra works best to achieve a rich dark shade. 4) Start with chocolate buttercream as that way you naturally start with a dark colour. Scoop a small amount, add colour and microwave till melted. This is my recipe for making black buttercream. Pointers: - The buttercream should be soft when you start out. - This approach will work for both oil based and gel based colors. - You can color either Swiss meringue buttercream or eggless buttercream this way. - For this amount of buttercream, I like heating it four times in the microwave. The first two times, I heat it for 10 seconds; the second two, for 8. With smaller amounts, reduce the amount of time you heat the buttercream. - If you let the buttercream rest after heating it up, the color will deepen.
