The concept of cultural memory of Jan Assman is the starting point of my research. In Rome, the social frame of social memory created the customs of ancestors, and historical examples, the places in the topography of Rome and figures from the past were 'the figures' of memory. The meticulous observance of the ritual characteristic of the Roman religion can be counted as an example of memory practices. Through the ritual people were confirming their memory of the gods and were reminding the gods of their expectations for them. The ritual was a kind of procedural memory that was connecting the Romans with their ancestors and the ancestral deities. Remembering and forgetting played an important role in many rituals related to, for example, the admission of foreign deities to the Roman pantheon. The memory was a form of godliness, which is why in various forms it was present in the images of Gods and ritual practice.

We discuss the role of this term in 20 th-century historiography with the focus on the works of Tadeusz Zieliński that are important to the reception of the oriental cults metaphor. We argue that the concept of oriental cults/oriental religions in its original version is not an effective or useful research tool. However, as a historiographical concept it has fulfilled its role in a threefold way: firstly, it drew scholars' attention to the vitality of ancient religious experience, secondly, it established the fact that Roman religion was a living organism, naturally adapted to changing political, social and cultural conditions, thirdly, it helped to understand the principles behind the construction of metaphors in the academic discourse.

Terminology is one of the more difficult issuesfacing academics investigating ancient religious imaginations. The history of the terms "paganism" and "polytheism," as well as the primary caveats associated with their use, are outlined in this article. Although both names areartificial inventions with added meaning, "polytheism" is thought to be less reliant on Christian beliefs.
This work is an attempt to describe the Roman ritual of evocation in the anthropological category... more This work is an attempt to describe the Roman ritual of evocation in the anthropological category of crisis ritual. The authors, analyzing the evocation of Yahweh carried out by Titus during the siege of Jerusalem, present this rite as an example of the activity of Roman 'redemptive hegemony', and one of the elements involved in the transformation of Roman religion which tried to answer the new calls connected with the transformation of the Roman state. They remain aware however that in this case we are discussing a ritual activity directed towards the Roman citizens themselves.

W przypadku matron występujących w roli mediatorek w sytuacjach zagrożenia wspólnoty żałoba stanowiła nie tylko pewnego rodzaju środek nacisku – ich działania wymagały rytualnej oprawy, od której zależała legalność i skuteczność interwencji. Manifestacje kolektywnej i zrytualizowanej żałoby uważano za pożądaną formę publicznej aktywności matron, ale tylko wte-dy, gdy płakały aby służyć miastu. W Rzymie kobiet nigdy nie zamykano w gyneceum, jak to bywało w świe-cie greckim, ale niezależnie od wieku i statusu społecznego podlegały one męskiej opiece (łac. tutela mulierum), sprawowanej przez ojców i mężów lub opiekunów wyznaczonych przez państwo. Tak rozpoczyna Liwiusz swoją relację z wydarzeń w Rzymie w 186 r. p.n.e., które nastąpiły zaledwie kilkanaście lat po zakończeniu wojny hannibalskiej i kilka lat po pierwszych rzymskich sukcesach militarnych w Grecji i na hellenistycznym Wschodzie.
