{Cupcake Monday} Mini Cupcake Stand Tutorial!

Happy Monday everyone! We spotted these adorable Mini Cupcake Stands on HWTM made by Jessica at Modern Moments Designs, we knew we had to share with you! Super adorable and simple to make. Just the way we like crafty projects!

Here is what you need:
1. Mini 3″ Candle Sticks made by Lara Crafts $2.99 for a set of 4
2. 3.25″ Wooden Unfinished Circles $0.29 ea. at JoAnn’s Craft Store
3. Wood Glue (Any brand will do.)
4. Spray Paint (pick a color, any color), Rust-Oleum from Home Depot $3.44 a can

Jessica purchased the Mini Candle Sticks online from New Image Group. They carry this brand of wood at Michael’s and other craft stores, but her local Michael’s didn’t carry this particular item. Take one candle stick and one circle. With a little wood glue, place it around the rim of the candle stick and adhere the circle in the center. Just eyeballed them. You could take the time to measure them, but Jessica didn’t think that was necessary. Let them dry for 24 hours before you handle them. Jessica said that she dropped hers several times and they are all still in tackt. That wood glue is some serious stuff!

Then, Jessica spray painted hers {well, her hubby did}. He did four coats and used just over one can of spray paint. They are fairly covered. Jessica said there were a few areas that could use some extra paint, but she thought it made them look a little distressed and that was perfect.
Let them dry and enjoy!

Seriously, that’s it. So, for just over $1 each, Jessica made 20 adorable cupcake stands. You could adorn them with ribbon, add some fancy paint job, vinyl the tops, etc.

Get creative!
We would love to see photos if you make them!

{Tutorial} Giant Quilled Snowflakes from the Sugar Plum Fairy Party

The response to the Sugar Plum Fairy Party we recently featured was outstanding!  And the question we got asked the most was how to make the giant snowflakes!  Nicole, the party designer, has offered us a tutorial on how to make these beauties.  Here are her instructions:

Large-scale Quilled Snowflakes Tutorial

Materials:

One package of large construction paper (approximately 10x15), available at any major craft store.

school glue

scissors

paperclips

1) Cut the construction paper into long, 1" wide strips.

2) Roll up each strip into a tight coil. Let uncoil slightly, and glue into a coiled circle shape using a small dab of Elmer's school glue. If necessary, use a paperclip to hold the glued end in place for a few minutes until the glue dries slightly.

3) Make a lot of these coils (many of my snowflakes had more than 20 coils). Turn some into teardrop shapes by pinching one side of the coiled circle. Turn into eye shapes (kind of oval, but pointed on both ends) by pinching the coiled circle on opposite sides. These are your basic shapes. There are other, more complicated ways to shape paper for quilling, but these three basic shapes will let you make many, many beautiful snowflake designs. Create extra variety while still using just these shapes by coiling some shapes tighter or looser to make smaller and larger shapes. Cut your strips in half to make very small circles (especially nice toward the outer edges of the snowflake, where you want a more delicate appearance.)  Here's a nice little resource I found on some other basic shapes: http://www.quilledcreations.com/QuillingBasics-Shapes.asp

4) Once you've made a bunch of the coiled shapes, start playing around, arranging them until you find a design you like. Glue together using the school glue. Don't use too much, though, or it will drip down and glue your snowflake to your work surface! You really don't need much to create a strong bond. I usually start with six of the same shape glued in a circle as the center of the snowflake, then start building outward. I suppose you could use a hot glue gun on snowflakes this scale. It's not something you'd use on typical quilling projects (there would be more hot glue than paper on those tiny snowflakes!) and I didn't think of the possibility until just now! But I think it would definitely work, and could really speed up the process if you're making quite a few of these large pieces.

One of the most lovely things about these snowflakes (and something I didn't actually expect until they were hanging in place) is that the lacy shadows of the snowflakes are just as lovely as the snowflakes themselves. What a happy accident gracing the walls!

I hung the snowflakes in place by first drilling holes into the studs and screwing C hooks into the walls. I strung silver wire between the hooks, and suspended the snowflakes at varying heights from the wire using mono-filament. You could barely tell that the wire and mono-filament were there, creating exactly the magical indoor flurry of snowflakes I had imagined.

Thank you Nicole for sharing your creativity with us!!

{DIY Party Projects} Mini Cake Bunting Tutorial & Free Printable Alphabet Pages!

We are sharing something super fun to celebrate our big milestone of reaching 10,000 fans on Facebook! I can't explain how thrilled I am that you love what we are doing here on The TomKat Studio and that you are telling your friends about us, too! If you aren't a fan on Facebook yet, JOIN THE PARTY HERE!
I enlisted the help of one of my favorite party girls, Sharnel Dollar of Sharnel Dollar Designs to share a fun MINI CAKE BUNTING tutorial with you! She created one (below) recently for a party and I fell in LOVE! If you don't know Sharnel, you should. This fabulous party girl is full of ideas and style. I swoon over her gorgeous dessert tables, party styling and projects!
Along with her instructions, I have designed several printable PDF alphabet pages that will work perfectly for this project! I also took a few shortcuts when I created my own bunting to celebrate our 10,000 fans! So, check out her tutorial and below you will find my shortcuts!

What you will need:

2 Bamboo Skewers
2 Striped Paper Straws
Embrodiery Thread
Needle
Scissors
Cardstock

Download and print the free printable alphabet pages of your choice on cardstock. Cut out bunting flags and arrange them in order on a flat surface. Thread your needle with embrodiery thread (it's perfectly ok to make funny faces when completing this task.) We pre-punched two holes on the top corners of each flag to make it easier to push the needle through the card. Embrodiery needles aren't sharp enough normally to pierce without making a mess of the card. Thread each of the flags from the top row then pop the needle through one of the straws. Take the needle off the thread and re-thread the other end to enable you to attach the loose end to the remaining straw. Place your skewers in your cake and then insert the straws over the skewers. Tie the end off with two or three knots to secure the bunting in place. Continue this with the remaining bunting.

My Tips:When I made mine, I used a few shortcuts. I didn't have time to pull out a thread and needle, so I designed the flags as foldover diamonds so that I could secure the folded flags over thin ribbon with double-sided tape. I didn't have skewers on hand, so I used 6" lollipop sticks instead. Then just tied the two strings of bunting on the straws. It was really easy and super fun!

Here's the fun part!

fyi...in the scribd preview, the letters appear to be lopsided but when printed they are not!

Thank you to Sharnel for this fabulous idea! {Tutorial} How to Make an Adorable Tulle Tutu!

I have been dreaming about making tutus for all of the little girls coming to Kate's party, although it seems it might be a daunting task with our guest list. When I posted some inspiration photos on Facebook, party planner Joanne from Oh Goodie Designs commented on how she made her own similar to the ones pictured! She was kind enough to create a TUTU-tutorial for me and for all of you TomKat Studio readers! We'll see if my mom & I can get these together for the party!

From Joanne:
First I gather my supplies, a roll of tulle for each color wanting to use.

I measure a yard and a half of ribbon in this case the polka dot, and tie each end to a chair.
Then, I cut about a foot from the tulle roll. I then tie making a pattern as I go the tulle in a double knot. I never tie it too tight as that would defeat the purpose of an adjustable tutu. I leave it loose enough to slide on the ribbon.
Once I finish tying, I then decorate with other coordinating ribbons and bows or flowers.
The tulle can be trimmed evenly as needed. The tutu is tied on with the ribbon in the back. I
t is adjustable to fit by sliding the tulle knots tight or spread out evenly.

Seems easy enough!
I'll keep you posted on what I decide to do for the party!
Thank you for sharing your instructions and photos, Joanne!
