So we know the @FCDOGovUK has to make tough choices. But the 80% cut of water sanitation and hygiene aid makes no sense on a number of levels. 🧵
1️⃣ It’s madness in the midst of a pandemic to cut coverage of a proven public health measure for combatting COVID, and for Ebola that has re-emerged in West Africa as @sallyhayd reports irishtimes.com/news/world/afr…
2️⃣ The Govt is reducing its ability to achieve one of its stated ambitions of ending preventable deaths esp maternal and child deaths. If it were serious it would listen to @HelenClarkNZ & @Laura_Ch cnn.com/2021/03/06/opi…

Speaking at a #webinar on the Indian Health Financing Landscape, @CafeEconomics makes the following observations relating to 1) #FiscalCapacity 2) #PoliticalEconomy 3) #Federalism (1/n)

@dvararesearch @IndiaSpend
India's #PublicHealthExpenditure is well predicted by its income, however compared to neighbours and other #LMICS, its public health spending is lower. This is despite India's Tax/GDP ratio gradually rising over the years. (2/n)
The post-reform Indian fiscal agenda has been to switch away from #PhysicalCapital to #HumanCapital with increased reliance on the private sector to generate employment. Job growth however has been inadequate and the state's approach to #HumanCapital has been compensatory (3/n)

This is Zokutu community on the outskirts of Kuje Area Council in Nigeria's Federal Capital Territory, #Abuja. With approximately 3000 people living in this community, this cave is the only source of water – drinking, bathing, laundry

The total absence of drinking water in #Zokutu community attracted the @mediaforcc team to visit and tell the first-hand story of #WaterPoverty experienced.

With poor road network, limited telecommunication access & mud houses, the level of development in #Zokutu is less than basic; more severe is the zero access to drinking water resulting in illnesses & deaths.

Distinguished, I woke up very concerned with the feelers I’m getting from developmental partners globally. This is probably why they are trying to distract me with their pettiness. But here are the facts you MUST know before bleating accolades for Tradermoni & nPower distractions
Yellow Fever is back with a bang with over 1400 cases in 7 States, along side many other epidemics they won’t pay attention to until they cripple our society. This admin has recorded the highest number of preventable infectious disease epidermics in Nigeria.
Critics & griots fixated on crumbs may defend this by alluding to the noise about routine immunization as bandied by government Comms, but the groundswell of the return of these epidemics show that lies have permeated this sector too. Kindly track the epidemics since 2015...

A great move for health security in #Nigeria last week, as His Excellency President @MBuhari declared a state of emergency on water, sanitation and hygiene #WaSH

Poor water, sanitation and hygiene, is a recurrent risk factor for many infectious diseases we face in #Nigeria, especially with #Lassafever and #cholera. We simply cannot #endcholera if we do not address #WASH Image
One of the most interesting aspects of my work as head of Nigeria's NPHI is visiting communities. Across many towns and villages, we find heaps of refuse, dirty ponds, littered streets, open defecation etc. We can all do better ImageImage

Here is an update to fact check our dear VP and Prof on his speech a year ago while flagging off FG’s Food Distribution Programme in Maiduguri. #FactCheck #AskQuestions dailypost.ng/2017/06/08/ful…
The question here is how the Billions were appropriated. We must note here that Silos weren’t rented for storage. The grains were stored in FG Silos. So where did the billions go without due process? Are we being told re-bagging & logistics cost consumed the Billions he took?! 🤔
Also to avoid misinformation, when the Presidency released an info through Femi Adesina on declaration of state of emergency on #WASH the data was manipulated.

I have harped on the Water Crisis in Nigeria and happy to see (non-political) leaders take action especially in our region. Our Government have acknowledged this but emphasis may have been focused on seeking aids to fill the Chad basin instead. 😞
I’m glad though that HE @ToyinSaraki met World Bank to map way forward for water, sanitation and hygiene in Nigeria.
Looking on the bright side the FG declared a state of emergency on the water crisis.

"Nigerians, who have to put up with the daily dangers of poor #WASH standards, can therefore have little confidence that future generations will be safer than they are.
Can they really expect that their children and grandchildren will be able to bring their own children into the world safely, in a clean labour room?
That their communities will not be ripped apart by diseases which could have been prevented with decent #WASH conditions?

One problem that keeps me awake at night is the recurring outbreaks of #cholera in parts of Nigeria. More worrisome is the water, sanitation & hygiene facilities in our country that contribute to these. In the midst of this, we're finding solutions
#NCDCSundayReflections
Over the last five months, States in #Nigeria have experienced outbreaks of #cholera. Although the numbers are now declining, it was hard to get States to prioritise water and sanitation! No reason we should be having #Cholera outbreaks in 2018.
Driving across States in Nigeria (and even within cities), the sight of people openly defecating, refuse poorly disposed, water carriers (mai ruwa) washing their watercans is not rare. We have a situation in our hands with regards to #WaSH
