I applaud the provincial and federal governments for decriminalizing personal possession of drugs in BC.

The BC Coroners Death Review Panel made it clear that #decriminalization is needed in order to ensure that people can access services without stigma. 1/ #bcpoli #cdnpoli
But this announcement comes with a caveat.

BC requested a limit for personal possession of 4.5 g, but the federal government only approved a limit of 2.5g.

Health experts and advocates argued for a higher threshold, based on data and evidence. 2/ #bcpoli #decriminalization
The intent of #Decriminalization is to reduce stigma, but when possession limits are low, it can result in higher potency of drugs, potentially causing more harm and a fear of seeking help. 3/ #bcpoli #EndTheStigma #safesupply

Hi guys! Harini dalam #ThreadTuesday, kita nak sembang about #DrugDecriminalization. Adakah decriminalization sama dengan legalization? Adakah sama dengan liberation of drug use? Ini adalah thread.
So first question; apa itu Decriminalization?

It means to eliminate atau hapuskan criminal penalties untuk hal-hal seperti

-Penggunaan dadah & memiliki dadah
-Memiliki alat menyuntik dadah seperti syringes
-Jualan dadah 'low-level'

A (HAPPY) THREAD: The #Montréal city council today passed a motion to call on the #GOC to decriminalize possession of drugs for personal use. We @HIVlegal applaud this initiative and congratulate all who fiercely advocated for it. We are proud to stand among you. #drugpolicy 1/7
Today’s motion joins the growing call for #decriminalization in municipalities across Canada, including #Toronto, #Vancouver, and others. Cities now recognize the many harms of #criminalization, which marginalizes people who use drugs and pushes them away from #harmreduction. 2/7
Removing the threat of criminal law will allow people who use drugs to do so more safely. Lives will be saved. #canpoli #Montréal 3/7

Government report on #prostitution states: "We do not have a problem with child trafficking". One paragraph later "a significant number of sex workers first sold sex as minors". Me: 🤨🤨🤨
That's what you get when denying the connection between adult & child commercial sexual exploitation even though the evidence is right in front of your eyes. Domestic child trafficking is still trafficking. It's not sex work. It's not kids selling sex. It's not underage sex work.
I really really don't wanna hear the mantra of "sex work isn't sex trafficking" when every evidence of clear definitive coercion (e.g. CHILDREN) is neatly rebranded "sex work" by the folks who espouse this. You're the ones who have a problem distinguishing. You really really do.

Double Bunking in an ICU is absurd.

Yes, warm bunking is normal in Oil & Gas but double bunking is a huge flag for the capacity of #abpoli health system.

Women in #prostitution are not fodder to protect the rest of us from violent men. This is not on women wanting to be decriminalised, but it is absolutely on the people who argued that sex is a (male) human right and a simple harmless service. feministcurrent.com/2020/01/31/pro…
Marylène Lévesque would literally still be alive, if Canadian authorities hadn't thought a murderer's sexual needs more important than her safety and enforced the Nordic Model that would make it unthinkable to endorse a man purchasing access to a woman in #prostitution.
#Decriminalization would not have protected her. Instead it would let more dangerous men leave institutions & prisons for the purpose of "purchasing sex" as though this is a kind of therapy or maybe akin to a massage (and the location of most brothels would be completely unknown)

There are a few completely unfounded claims that consistently arise around how #decriminalization would impact the size of the industry being repeated by @Polaris_Project @ncose & others operating in bad faith, and demonstrating an embarrassing disinterest in data. (1/ )
There are claims that there would be an explosion of the size of the industry. But lets talk abt studies: The country which has decriminalized (New Zealand) & the most recent report on a country which instituted increased criminalization through the #NordicModel (NIreland) (2/ )
NZ had studies before/after & notes the challenges w methodology. Only 1 area replicated their study exactly & after 8 yrs of decrim found an increase of 11 ppl. 17 more indoors, 6 less on the street. They also noted more visibility - which is good. (3/ ) prostitutescollective.net/wp-content/upl…

@councilofdc opens w @charlesallen setting an ask for respect and the necessity of this debate. @JackEvansWard2 gives some history on the issue in DC & approaches to prostitution - all rely on policing, inc “creative solutions” which were considered unconstitutionally harsh
