THREAD: Basil’s first campaign in the East #byzantine #roman #medieval #varangian #viking
After Basil defeated Phokas’s rebellion in 989 he returned his attention to his eternal foe: Bulgaria. However, trouble was brewing in Syria.
In 992, Manjutakin, the Fatimid governor of Damascus broke his truce with the Byzantine Empire. Manjutakin invaded the Hamdanid Emirate, a Byzantine protectorate, and defeated the doux of Antioch’s army. Manjutakin then raided Antioch’s suburbs and besieged Aleppo.

THREAD: Origins of the Varangian Guard (1/12) Image
Although Rus and Norse mercenaries had been fighting in the service of the Byzantine Empire as early as 874, the typical date used as the founding of an official “Varangian Guard” comes from the reign of Basil ll. Basil’s early reign was marked by rebellion. 2/12 Image
In 987, the general Bardas Phokas led a rebellion and captured most of Byzantine Anatolia. At the end of the year his army set into a siege of Abydos, a city on the Dardanelles. If Abydos fell, Phokas’s army could cut off access to the Aegean and besiege Constantinople. (3/12) Image

#PlanetaryProtection has an enormous impact on interplanetary #astrobiology mission design and execution. Check out the rest of this thread for a few case studies on how it has been implemented over the years!

During the #Apollo era, it was unknown whether life existed on the Moon. To prevent contamination of the Earth’s biosphere by lunar microbes, both astronauts and the samples they collected were subject to quarantine following return to Earth.

Following splashdown in the Pacific Ocean, Armstrong, Aldrin, and Collins were transferred to a camper-like mobile quarantine facility. From there, they were transported to Johnson Space Center, where they spent 3 weeks in quarantine.

Contrary to the image of the Viking funeral in a burning ship floating off into the sea, the ships, instead of being burned were buried. The most famous one is the Oseberg Ship burial in Norway #Vikings
The burial is dated to 834AD. The ship which had been buried in a mound was nearly 22 meters long. It contained an enormous number of grave goods including beds, chests, buckets but remarkably the skeleton of a peacock #Vikings
It also contained 3 full-size sleighs, a full size wagon and best of all a tapestry which allows us to have a look at what these early Vikings might have believed about the otherworld #Vikings

Latest* #Viking DNA news! New research out in Nature today - here's what's exciting and what I have a problem with.👇

Does it change our view of the Vikings? No.
Are there some very cool data? Yes
Are there some *big* problems? Also Yes.

🧬New evidence of 'substantial' geneflow INTO Scandinavia, incl. from southern (!) Europe & also Britain. We suspected this, but great to see more conclusive evidence AND from regions we previously didn't know about

This thread is a story about 'The Beasts of Oseberg'- five exquisitely carved and mysterious #Viking Age objects @kulturhistorisk
Photo: Kirsten Helgeland
@Kulturhistorisk Many will have seen pictures of these animal heads found in the ship burial of Oseberg, AD 834. The heads where originally five in number: The Academic, The Lions head, The Carolingian and The Baroque head no.1 and no.2.
Photo: Kirsten Helgeland
@Kulturhistorisk Each head is about 50 cm in length. A straight handle (50-75cm) was attached near the base. If held by the handle only it would be possible but not easy to balance the head upright. Besides the handle the heads are not parts of a vehicle or furniture. Their use seem inscrutable.

Remember "London Bridge is falling down"? Here's the story of #LondonBridge!
There's been a series of bridges across the #RiverThames in #London since #Roman times, 2000 years ago. They were wooden till a stone one was built between 1176 and 1209.
#nspoli #NovaScotia #mining #ns Image
The 1176 #LondonBridge stood over 600 years. The heads of traitors were impaled on it - so many that there was an official Keeper of the Heads! The first head, in 1305, was that of #WilliamWallace, the #Scottish solider #MelGibson played in #Braveheart.
#nspoli #NovaScotia Image
A new #LondonBridge was completed in 1831. It was made of #granite from #Haytor Quarry, which is now part of the #Dartmoor National Park.
Its lamps were made from the melted-down cannons of #NapoleonBonaparte's army.

In the early part of the first millennium CE, the #IndoEuropean language known as Proto-#Germanic diverged into an East branch (which included #Gothic) and a Northwest branch.

Northwest then split into West and North branches when Proto-#Norse developed in #Scandinavia. Image
Until the 8th century, #Germanic #languages, including Proto-#Norse, were written in Elder Futhark, the earliest #runic #alphabet.

The name #Futhark comes from the initial phonemes in the names of the first six #runes:
ᚠ ᚢ ᚦ ᚨ ᚱ ᚲ
F U Þ A R K

By the beginning of the #Viking Age around 800 CE, Proto-#Norse had evolved into Old Norse, and #Scandinavia's writing system transitioned from the 24 #runes of Elder #Futhark to Younger Futhark's 16 runes.

The #Swedish #SparlĂśsa #Runestone from ~800 CE features both #alphabets. Image

Recently I found myself in need of a proper 'door of Óðinn' (Old Norse kenning for shield). Thus I had to gather some wood and hide, heat up the forge and make one.
1/11
I made this #Viking #shield primarily based on those found in the #Gokstad ship burial, but also remnants from other archaeological finds and information in the writings of Theophilus 'On Diverse Arts' Chapter 17 (c.1100).

2/11
Many years ago I got as far as making a shield board. I decided to continue from there. The board from pine measured 89 cm diameter & was 8,5 mm thick at the center. This was thinned down to 5,5 mm approximately 1,5 cm from the edge, then to 1-2 mm at the very edge.

These past few weeks I have been back to old tricks continuing the #conservation of the #Viking #Helmet from #Gjermundbu @Kulturhistorisk

Almost a year ago I took the helmet apart. It consisted of 7 fragments:

I located 10 more pieces in storage, among the fragments of a cauldron from the same grave as the helmet. Here are all the 17 helmet parts layed out after having being cleaned by micro-sandblasting.

The #Gjermundbu helmets spectacle faceplate is of ('Hold Brillan!', trøndsk proverb). X-ray does not reveal remnants of precious metal decoration, but a two part construction can be observed, overlaped and forge-welded at each temple and in the nose area. #Viking @Kulturhistorisk
The spectacle faceplate is cleaning up nicely during micro-sandblasting. I take care not to damage the extremely shallow filling of the decorative lines - just a fraction of a millimeter deep. I need to try some XRF-analysis to possibly identify the filling material. #Gjermundbu
I just could not resist ...

Today I started #conservation work on the Gjermundbu helmet - sometimes refered to as the only #Viking Helmet. The process will entail disassembly, micro-sandblasting, detailed photos of all parts, X-ray, 3D-scan and a new mounting. Photo: Jessica Leigh McGraw @Kulturhistorisk
The #Gjermundbu helmet presented in this tweet is from a rich equestrian grave from the second half of the 10th century - a cremation burial that involved destruction/'killing' of the weapons. C27317 @Kulturhistorisk
