And can use just any old key.

A Random Non-Christmas Related Tip/Trick

Have you ever looked at a layout online or in print and wondered how in the world they did that? In my case, I was always a little skeptical and perplexed by scrapbookers that placed embellishments and/or papers off the page. I thought, "Yeah, that's cute and all, but how do they get the page in their scrapbooks?" And then the light bulb went off for me - if I compensate for the "overhang" on the one side by trimming my page down on the other, it will slide right in the page protector!

Now I'm not an expert, I don't know all the design principles that are necessary in order to create a stellar page. I just go with what feels right to me - sometimes it's a hit, and sometimes it's definitely not. But to me, placing elements of your design both on and off the page lends natural movement to the design and carries your eye throughout the page. Think about it. When you throw a handful of leaves or snow up in the air, it scatters all over the place. Same thing if you spill a jar of buttons on the table. They do not stop abruptly at the edge. So I carry that "principle" over into my scrapbooking. I generally place my embellishments off the page by only 1/4" - 1/2", and then trim the page down to 11 3/4" x 12" or 11 1/2" x 12" to compensate for the overhang. Another alternative is to carry your design off the page and then trim the excess off, keeping your page 12" x 12". I think you still get the effect of movement, without dealing with elements hanging off the page. Here are some pages I've done in the past that are examples of this "principle" in action. I hope this has been a helpful tip/trick to you! :) Have a Merry Christmas!

Displaying Greeting Cards

The cards are a-comin'! Getting Christmas cards in the mail is one of the things I look forward to when December rolls in. This is that time of year when friends and kin really make an effort to keep in touch ,and I love watching the card pile get higher everyday, thankful to have so many who care enough to take the time to write. Of course, I proudly display these treasured gems in our home. This year, I used an old loaf pan dressed up with a ribbon and glittered trees from this month's Embellishment Kit. I ran some scrap green papers through the shredder to use as fillers.

I also hung a glass ornament filled with buttons. Check this out:

Make several of these ornaments using embellishments from your stash -- ribbons, eyelets, blings, etc., and hang them on the tree or, better yet, gift a couple to your loyal scrap buddies.

Now, how about you? How do you display your cards? Have you sent yours out??? Just five more sleeping nights before Christmas!

only 8 days until Christmas

We all have a million things on our to do lists this time of year. It is inevitable. We rush around to buy the best gifts (on sale of course) then we rush to wrap the gifts (must make it look extra pretty) and sometimes we rush from house to house to deliver the gifts.

If you are anything like me you often find yourself looking around after Christmas wondering "Where did it go?" Well this year I challenge you to grab your camera and document this glorious season. Below I have listed some photo op ideas that I hope make your holiday scrapping SUPER FUN.

Dec 12

Can you believe it is mid December already? I think I say this daily at this point in my life but.... time is just flying past at warp speed. The number one thing on my to do list this weekend is Christmas cards. How are you guys doing? Do you use store bought carda? Make your own? Write a Chrismtas letter? I'd love to hear!

We usually do a letter every few years. I'm not sure if this will be a letter year or not. I always do a picture/card of the kids. It is really the only time I ever digi-scrap. I always find a really cute free kit somewhere on-line to download. Then I open a 4" x 6" blank document in Photoshop and create my own card with it. I would share past ones but my computer crashed and I lost everything from the past 2 years ( go back up everything NOW!!!!). I will try to post this years once I have it done.

My mom did something really cute this year ( How lucky am I that my mom and I share a love for this hobby of ours) She made her Christmas card and letter all on the same sheet. She used 8.5 x 11 cardstock and just printed her letter on one side, folded the card in thirds and decorated the front side just like you would a card and then hand wrote a greeting inside. I will take a picture and post it soon.

I love how the Holidays let us catch up with those friends that we only hear from this time of year.

Teacher Gift for the Holidays

This time of year there's always chatter about what gift to give to the classroom teachers. As the "class mom" for my daughter this year, I collected money from all the kids in the class so they could give the teacher a collaborative gift. However, I wanted to give a little "extra" to the teacher without spending a lot of money. So, this year I altered the good old clipboard! I am sure many of you have done this before, but they always make for such an adorable gift. The clipboard I altered for my daughter's Kindergarten teacher still remains on the wall, hanging in her classroom... 4 years later! :)

The supplies cost next to nothing! I purchased the clipboard from Office Max for $1.50. The reason I loved this one was because it is almost the exact color of Kraft cardstock...my favorite! :) All the product was from my stash! I used some scraps from The Scraproom's September Kit as well as their calendar stamp...one of my all time favorites I might add! :)

This project is so simple, so easy and so cost effective! Most of all...You can't go wrong be creating it because it is always a hit with the teachers!

btw...the title is part of a quote so if anyone knows who's original quote it is, I would like to give them credit! :)

Thanks!

Gina

Take time

I love the holiday season! Even with all the craziness that comes with it. We all get so busy with buying gifts and I have to say that the best gifts I have given have been home made one. They also have the best memories.

Like one year Erin and I made our first scrap calendar for LindaN(our mom). Well we decided to try a bleach technique, where you get bleach bubbles and it bleaches the paper... We filled up her sink with water and a LOT of bleach and proceeded to blow bubbles with straws. Well needless to say we were over come with bleach and didn't end up using that technique.

Then another year my Dear Husband decided that I needed to do a mini album for his mom, and he was going to help. He actually fell asleep at the scrapbook table......

Yep lots and lots of fun memories. So maybe this year you can make a gift for someone you love and make a ton of memories for you too.
