Cheap & Easy Ribbon Solution

I've been trying to find a method for storing/displaying ribbon.  I'm converting the shelves in our bedroom to craft storage; It seems I'm outgrowing the laundry room.

When I say cheap, I really mean it.  If you use your 40% off coupons at Hobby Lobby, each ribbon holder comes out to under $1.  Awesome, right?  Here's how I did it:

Get some of these
1/4" x 12" wood dowels

And something to use for a base
Here I am marking where the center is.  Not really... I'm not left handed but this is the only way I could get a picture.

After marking where you're going to make the hole for the dowel, be sure to put a thick piece of wood (or in my case another base) under the piece you're drilling.  You don't want to end up with a hole in your kitchen floor if you accidentally drill too far.
I numbered them just so you could see there are two stacked.

Go ahead and drill a hole with a 1/4" bit if you are using a 1/4" dowel.
Grumble about how you wished you had a drill press, then realize for the first time in over 10 years of owning your drill that it has one of these
A bubble level!  Who knew?  OK, maybe I don't need a drill press.

Here it is after I drilled the hole.  I'd say I went about 75% of the way through, but anywhere between halfway and not quite all the way through the piece of wood will do.

Put your dowel in to make sure it fits OK and then put a dab of wood glue or hot glue or whatever kind of glue you want in the hole.

Fit your dowel in and voila!  A ribbon holder!
Now they're ready to be painted

This is my favorite paint for crafty projects and small murals
You can get it mixed in just about any color for around $5.  I am doing a lot of small items in the living room and bedroom in this yellow

Any type of paint will work, but I wanted to let you know about the ridiculously cheap custom color quarts you can get at Sherwin Williams.  Now get painting!

And here it is all done
Supa easy!  No more digging through bins to find the ribbon I'm looking for.

Thanks for stopping by!  I'll be linking this up at various blogs this week; Check out the link party tab in the sidebar if you're looking to blog hop.

Blessings,
Jamie
