The Talisman is an object created by the Guardian Knights, for the purpose of seeking out a being worthy enough to be deemed a Knight and aid in the battle against Quintessa. It has some degree of sentience, as it is able to alter its shape and even become mobile if that is necessary to fulfill its purpose.
According to the prophecy, the Talisman appearing is the first sign of the apocalypse, signalling the end of times. Some bots would consider it wise to stay as far away from it as possible.

Fiction
The Last Knight film
Created in the distant past under unknown circumstances, the Talisman was viewed as the first of seven signs of the coming apocalypse.
In the 21st century, a Knight journeyed to Earth to seek allies in the coming battle against Quintessa only for his craft to be shot down over the city of Chicago by the TRF. Cade Yeager had tracked the craft and attempted to aid the Knight only to find his wounds fatal. The Knight was impressed by Cade's bravery however and found him worthy of the Talisman. But when he attempted to offer it to him, Cade refused believing the relic to merely be a personal trinket of the Knight. Though the Knight perished, the Talisman activated and smuggled itself onto Cade's jeep. The act was witnessed by Barricade who reported it to Megatron and prompted the Decepticons into an alliance with the TRF to find the Talisman and subsequently the Staff of Merlin.
Upon returning to the Autobot hideout, Cade discovered the Talisman. The merchant Daytrader explained the Talisman's significance in Cybertronian mythology and advised, that if it was the genuine article, to leave the planet as a result of its presence. When the Decepticons attacked, the Autobots fled to nearby ghost town where the Talisman bonded to Cade's skin.
When brought before Sir Edmund Burton, he explained to Cade that the Talisman Knight had sought out Cade for embodying the goodness in the human race and being worthy of the Talisman. Not Cade specifically, god forbid, merely one who embodied the qualities of a knight. Aboard the HMS Alliance, Cade attempted to remove the Talisman only for it to slither out of his reach.
When Cade and Viviane Wembly had found the Staff, it was soon seized by Nemesis Prime. Though Bumblebee proved able to break Optimus free of Quintessa's control, the Guardian Knights attempted to slay the Prime for serving the "Great Deceiver". In a surge of emotion, Cade managed to activate the Talisman, turning it into a blade. At the sight of the weapon, the Knights stood down, recognizing Cade and Optimus as allies. The Last Knight
