Firebugs are natives of the planet Furnacia. They have the ability to set fires and they feed on high temperatures. When their planet burnt out, they fled, with most of them landing on Thessin. Being an ice planet, Thessin did not make for a hospitable environment for them. They are believed by some to be extinct, but at least one nameless Firebug survived.

A Firebug landed on Earth and proceeded to wreak havoc on a town near Mount St. Hilary. A short time later, three Autobots on a scouting mission from Cybertron also made landfall on the organic world. Sandstorm saw the smoke in the distance and decided to investigate. When he saw the town ablaze, he radioed the others for help. Inferno recognized the Firebug as the source of the conflagration, and with the help of Broadside and Sandstorm, captured the critter alive. In order to keep him from causing further destruction, they sent him to Mercury in a message pod. He seemed happy there. Firebug!
