RK Liew is appointed as a Research Associate at the Pyrolysis Technology Research Group, School of Ocean Engineering of the University Malaysia Terengganu (UMT).Liew was awarded First Class Honours for his bachelor’s degree in chemical science followed by a master’s degree in chemical technology. He was the recipient of prestigious University award – Anugerah Pengerusi LPU (an award for the best master student with outstanding achievement). He was then awarded several scholarships such as Mahasiswa Cemerlang 2015 (JPA) and MyMaster that sponsored for his Master study and Biasiswa Tuanku Chanselor (BTC) (a scholarship awarded to only one PhD candidate with outstanding profile in the year) that sponsored for his PhD study.Liew’s work lies mainly in Chemical and Environmental Engineering, concentrating on Pyrolysis Techniques, Waste

Microwave co-torrefaction (MCT) was performed on empty fruit bunch (the most abundant waste from ... more Microwave co-torrefaction (MCT) was performed on empty fruit bunch (the most abundant waste from oil palm industry) mixed with waste oil (used engine oil, used cooking oil) to simultaneously utilize these waste materials to produce better quality solid fuel product. The effect of temperature and types of waste oil on the product yield and fuel properties (high heating value (HHV), energy yield, and fuel ratio) were investigated. MCT provided a rapid heating (50-65 • C/min) and a shorter process time of 5-8 min than that shown by conventional torrefaction performed using furnace (&gt; 30 min). The rapid heating could be attributed to the use of a cubical microwave cavity with helical lift for 2-dimensional movement (rotational and translational motion) that allows uniform distribution of microwave radiation for heating and torrefaction. The empty fruit bunch torrefied with used engine oil at 250 • C showed maximum energy yield of 100 wt% and produced solid fuel product with high mass yield (85.5 wt%), fuel ratio (1.8), carbon content (68.3 wt%) and fixed carbon content (62 wt%). Solid fuel product of high higher heating value (28.0 MJ/kg) was produced from microwave co-torrefaction of empty fruit bunch with used engine oil at 300 • C. Our results demonstrate that microwave-co-torrefaction represents a promising waste reduction approach to convert empty fruit bunch mixed with waste oil to produce solid fuel with improved properties.

An innovative microwave pyrolysis method was developed to produce biochar from WPS while the pyrolysis gas generated as another product is simultaneously used as activating agent to transform the biochar into waste palm shell activated carbon (WPSAC), thus allowing carbonization and activation to be performed simultaneously in a single-step approach. The pyrolysis method was investigated over a range of process temperature and feedstock amount with emphasis on the yield and composition of the WPSAC obtained. The WPSAC was tested as dye adsorbent in removing methylene blue. This pyrolysis approach provided a fast heating rate (37.5°C/min) and short process time (20 min) in transforming WPS into WPSAC, recording a product yield of 40 wt%. The WPSAC was detected with high BET surface area (≥ 1200 m 2 /g), low ash content (< 5 wt%), and high pore volume (≥ 0.54 cm 3 /g), thus recording high adsorption efficiency of 440 mg of dye/g. The desirable process features (fast heating rate, short process time) and the recovery of WPSAC suggest the exceptional promise of the single-step microwave pyrolysis approach to produce high-grade WPSAC from WPS.
