Despite this, there are many issues remain to be resolved. One such long standing issue is assessment of service-learning. Although currently many attempts have been made to assess its impact from different quarters at school levels in different parts of the world, in the field of higher education, the nature, quality and applicability of these assessments are questioned for being incomplete or less reliable due to many shortcomings affiliated with the practice of service-learning. Hence, this paper critically reviews the assessment practices, their importance, nature and types in the field of service-learning in higher education. The paper also discusses some of the challenges and possibilities faced by service-learning practitioners for using different assessment sources and procedures for assessing service-learning. Finally, the paper concludes with an emphasis on the need of using different assessment techniques in service-learning as it will be easier to answer the current assessment debates in the field of service-learning.
Purpose – This study aims to investigate whether organisational climate (OC) predicts academic st... more Purpose – This study aims to investigate whether organisational climate (OC) predicts academic staff performance at Malaysian higher education institutions (HEIs). The study equally aims at validating the psychometric properties of OC and workforce performance (WFP) constructs. Design/methodology/approach – Survey questionnaires were administered to 800 academic staff of eight selected HEIs. Principal component analysis, confirmatory factor analysis, full-fledged structural equation modelling and multiple regression analysis were performed to explore the underlying factors and test the factorial validity of the constructs. Findings – The analysis yielded a five-factor index for the OC construct, whereas the WFP construct comprised two factors. The findings reveal a strong predictive causal effect between OC and WFP. These results suggest that establishing a positive OC enhances academic staff performance. Furthermore, the hypothesised model adds new knowledge to the literature of OC, from the Malaysian context, which could be used to predict WFP at the tertiary level. Practical implications – The study concludes by discussing the theoretical and practical implications of the findings for HEIs. Originality/value – This paper makes a significant contribution to the understanding of how OC could be used as an effective instrument in improving academic staff performance in the context of Malaysian HEIs.
Academic advising at Malaysian public universities has been in existence for more than three deca... more Academic advising at Malaysian public universities has been in existence for more than three decades. However, different universities have different ways of running their programs. As a result, there is no standard academic advising program available for public universities of Malaysia. This study intends to fill the gap by exploring the expectations of students, advisors and administrators toward academic advising. Using qualitative research approach, the study explores the potential standardized components which can be used for developing a program standard. The findings of this study indicated that while each of the three groups favors the establishment of an academic advising standard, students suggest that the responsibility of advisors be clarified and the technological support be maintained and updated, advisors focus on assessment and rewards as well as staff development. At the same time, administrators focus on the components leadership, staff development, finance and assessment. Their opinions about the components of a future standard showed varying ideas and concepts, the dominant trend being the adaptation of international trends to the local values. The results of the study are expected to contribute to the development of academic advising standards for Malaysian public universities.

In-depth interviews were conducted to identify the relevant and desirable learning and development outcomes of academic advising. The interviews were recorded and transcribed verbatim. The qualitative data was analyzed using a thematic analysis. Results showed that the relevant and desirable learning and development outcomes resulting from active participation in academic advising programs can be divided into seven themes. The themes are intellectual growth, effective communication, enhanced self-esteem, leadership development, meaningful interpersonal relation and social responsibility, satisfying and productive lifestyles, and attainment of personal and educational goals. The findings provide evidence on the impact of well-planned academic advising programs toward achievement of student learning and development outcomes. The findings can also be used to develop academic advising program standards to ensure the quality of academic advising programs in UTM.
