As promised, here's the rest of the Palace Theatre show with the headliners, the Jayhawks. Though this wasn't necessarily a "Christmas" concert, the on-stage set had a festive look to it. The band is tight and play a typical Jayhawks set with the usual crowd favourites and closed with the Golden Smog "cover", Until You Came Along, bringing back Dan Murphy and Steve Gorman from the Smog and Gary's wife for a festive sing-a-long. Though they didn't play Father Christmas, Run Rudolf Run or 2000 Miles, like they did last year, but they did include a couple Christmas songs, the Kitty Wells cover, Christmas Ain't Like Christmas Anymore and the Band's, Christmas Might Be Tonight. The sound is exceptional and the Jayhawks, as usual put on a great show. Get this while you can, highly recommended!

Golden Smog- Live At The First Avenue, April 3, 2022: Night 2

It was another amazing night of music in Minneapolis, as Golden Smog played the second night of their two-night run at the First Avenue. A set similar to the previous night, the band settled in quickly and seemed to be more relaxed and comfortable with their familiar surroundings. Once again, I was content with viewing the concert via: livestream with perfect sound and a clear view of the performers. I can appreciate the technology because now there is a much larger audience viewing this show from pretty much anywhere with the ability to watch the show on replay which would benefit viewers in other time zones that might not be able to watch it live. It was a wonderful concert and if you were lucky enough to view both nights, you were treated to a number of different songs from the night before. Let's cross our fingers it doesn't take another 15 years for the band with Jeff Tweedy to get together. I'm sure fans would love a new Golden Smog album and how about a tour of other cities so more fans can enjoy them in person.

Highlights:

• It's always a bonus when bands play some different songs on the second night and with three albums and an EP to their credit, they have no shortage of good material to play live. The first 6/7 songs in the set were the same (in the same order), as they switched in Making Waves in place of Yesterday Cried from Saturday's setlist. Different songs played on Sunday night: All the Same To Me, Easy To Be Hard (from the On Golden Smog EP), Frying Pan Eyes, Strangers (Kinks cover), Scotch On Ice, She Don't Have To See You).
• The chemistry between Jeff Tweedy and Gary Louris was in evidence again, especially during the acoustic songs they played together. Their guitar interplay was incredible! I knew Gary was an amazing guitar player, but Jeff proved he has some crazy chops as well, his guitar playing is so underrated. The overall musical talent displayed on stage by everyone in the band is a privilege to witness.

• It was also a bonus to have Jessy Greene perform live with the band. She played on Weird Tales and toured with the band previously. Her connection with the band goes beyond Golden Smog as she was a member of the Jayhawks and has played with Wilco and Soul Asylum. In fact, when I saw Wilco, in Minneapolis in 2001, Jessy made an appearance with the band for Jesus Etc. and her band, VioVoom opened.
• Before the encore, drummer, Jody Stephens took the mic to say, how incredible it was so spend time with the guys and "It's more thrilling to see you, thank you so much and incredibly thrilling to see these guys too". Listen for yourself towards the end of track 21.
• Sammy Tweedy once again came out to sing lead on Helpless.  He's a very fine singer and I'd be interested to hear more. He remained on stage for Until You Came Along, singing backup.
  

• Jeff and Gary hugging at the end of the first encore set! Touching moment, indeed. 
  

• Unfortunately, the second encore was cut from the live-stream, so it's not included in this recording. Apparently, everyone thought the show was over, including Nugs.net. To make up for it, here's a video somebody posted to YouTube of Revolution Blues, from the second encore.

The Jayhawks- All "Covers" Show- Minneapolis 2021

 

In this weird topsy turvy world we're living in, I haven't been to a live concert in almost a year. I've had other dry spells in recent years, but I've had the choice to attend or not. Now, at least here in Canada, gathering of people is still a non-starter and my guess is that it will still be a while before I can see a band or any type of live performer in the foreseeable future. Musicians have had to be creative to continue to make a living playing music and finding a venue for their performances have moved for the most part online. The last concert I personally recorded was the Wilco show last March a day or so before they cancelled the rest of their tour. It's funny because in the days and weeks leading up to the concert, I was considering cutting back on recording and taking the time to actually listen and enjoy shows without the worry of capturing a good recording. I haven't taken this approach in decades now because I was always worried I would "miss" some great moment I would regret missing. Now that there are no concerts to attend, I do miss the adrenaline of the live show and the reward of a great sounding souvenir. Enter the concept of live streaming concerts where bands can perform remotely from their home, recording studio or a stage in a cafe or club without a live crowd present, performing to an online audience. The quality of these performances have greatly varied, but they are rapidly improving and it's been worth checking out. Some are free, some you can donate what you want, while others you need to purchase tickets to view these live events. I have watched some shows from each category and while the performances have been generally good, the sterile atmosphere without an audience takes away that interaction, connection and excitement a live concert generates. This is similar to watching live sports (hockey comes to mind) without the crowds, it definitely loses something even with the fake crowd noise and flashing lights, it has become a made-for-TV event.

There are many pros to the online live streaming concerts to consider. You don't even have to leave your house (or apartment), you can eat and drink what you want during the show, you can wear what you want without considering the weather outside (hot or cold) and the comfort of sitting on your couch or desk chair is surely an upgrade from sitting or standing some distance from the stage. You don't have to feel crowded and squished while attending and as a taper, the worry of talkers, slammers or general ass-holes at the show sometimes makes attending a show an unpleasant experience. I stress a lot taping shows, on the lookout for bouncers and security, adjusting sound levels and pressing the right buttons in the dark and timing bathroom breaks (the balance of drinking vs not drinking during a concert). Location of the the seats or on the floor are also an important factors for getting a decent recording and since I'm height restricted (short), I often can barely see the stage, so it's much easier in the comfort of

home. While watching these live streams I've decided to put my recorder to good use and I'm inputting the audio directly into the recorder. Though the sound quality has been great, it hasn't been without flaws and glitches on my end with internet lag issues and me clicking the wrong buttons. The previously posted Juliana Hatfield streams sound fantastic, not without some issues that don't take away too much from the recording. The Jayhawks and front-man, Gary Louris have been streaming live shows throughout the pandemic and the latest group show was in January with an all-covers concert. The band performed many covers I've never heard them play and clearly many songs in the set they were still learning (sheet music), as well as a couple that have been known to be in a Jayhawks set (Driving Wheel, Revolution Blues). A very interesting, loose fun show (some false starts) with everyone in the band taking lead vocals, a refreshing take on these covers and I'm sure many of these songs will appear in future Jayhawks shows.

Notes:

• As mentioned earlier, there are glitches in this recording most obviously during the first track (Different Drum) where there are a couple of gaps of silence. Apparently, I clicked the screen when I was increasing the volume and it either paused or muted the audio for 10-15 seconds (twice!). I would have rerecorded the song if video was still up, but because of licensing issues it is no longer available. If anyone has a clean copy of the song, please DM me.
  
• A pleasant reoccurring appearance from sometimes Hawk/Smogger, Kraig Johnson on several songs and lead vocals on Revolution Blues, a Neil Young cover he sings with Golden Smog.
• Jim from the Facebook The Jayhawks Fan Page posted the setlist with the original artist and in bold, who sang lead vocals.  (The setlist posted at the bottom of the page will be in the text file in the download.)

The Jayhawks- Live At The First Avenue 1994

According to the Jayhawks official Facebook page, the Jayhawks have played 70 times on the mainstage at the First Avenue and the 7th St. Entry in Minneapolis. Their first ever show at the venue was at the Entry opening for Alex Chilton on February 21, 1985. Through the years, the band has made it a regular habit to grace the stage of the First Avenue almost every year often for multi-night runs. To say they're a regular or like family at the First Avenue, would be an understatement. The Jayhawks are a very important band in the Twin Cities scene and they have continued to release new material with or without Mark Olson in the band. Gary Louris has kept the Jayhawks active continuing to constantly tour and like most bands have had to postpone tour dates to the fall and the new year (2021). It was announced today their latest album, XOXO will be released on July 10th.

When the Jayhawks played at the First Avenue in November of 1994, they were performing new material that would appear on their next and arguably their best album, Tomorrow The Green Grass which was released on February 14, 1995. This show has an excellent setlist if you're a fan of their earlier material, featuring songs from Hollywood Town Hall (or is this their best?), Blue Earth and even a song from the first album (King of Kings). There was already a buzz about the band at this point and they were on the edge of even wider exposure potential with this "new" material. This era of the band (classic Olson/Louris era) helped give the band it's lasting legacy and helped reinforce the "No Depression", alt-country-rock Americana sound that I enjoyed a lot in the 90's. This is a great concert and the live recording is near perfect, a good sounding board tape for sure!

Jayhawks 1985 Demos

Saw these posted last week on Dime and I must admit I've have never actually heard these 1985 demos. The band formed in 1985, so I'm assuming they're some of the earliest recordings from Mark Olson, Gary Louris, Marc Perlman and Norm Rogers as the Jayhawks. None of these songs appeared on their first album, released by Bunkhouse Records in 1986. Their second release, Blue Earth took tracks from re-mixed demos recorded in 1986-89, and again, none of the songs from the 1985 demos appeared on Blue Earth. In otherwords, these songs remain officially unreleased. One song, Clouds Across The Sky does sound like an early working of Clouds from Hollywood Town Hall with a similar melody and different lyrics (except, the first line is the same).

If you're a fan of early Jayhawks, this is a curious, yet must-hear listen. It is similar in it's country-rock twang of the first record and it's fascinating to hear the progression of sound the band went through in the early days.

Happy New Year!
Last year, I meant to post my favourite albums of 2011, but unfortunately it didn't happen. I won't even attempt to pretend I have the time or the energy to recall all the new music I heard this past year. As usual, I listened to a lot of music, but not necessary "new music" as I was in a "reflective" mood re-listening and rediscovering a lot of bands from my youthful days (80's and 90's). In the last few years there seems to be a large amount of reissues and special edition anniversary collections being released to reignite interest (and sales?) of "classic" or overlooked albums.

Another continued trend is the reformation of original or classic lineups of bands that had either been broken up or have been inactive for a prolonged period of time. A recent example would be Dinosaur Jr, Guided By Voices, Graham Parker (and the Rumour), and the Jayhawks who have reformed classic lineups to record and tour. Off the top of my head, other favourite groups of mine that have reformed and stayed to together (maybe only temporarily or maybe for longer than originally) include: The Pixies, The Feelies, Descendents, Dead Milkmen, The Posies, Del Lords, Camper Van Beethoven, Pavement, Fastbacks, Ben Folds Five, Rolling Stones (?), Mission of Burma...just to name a few. (Any other bands you were excited when they reunited?)

Some interesting reunions I'm looking forward to in 2013 include Ben Deily, co-founder and ex-Lemonhead reuniting with Evan Dando, along with Juliana Hatfield and Ryan Adams (!) for a new Lemonheads album. Deily hasn't recorded or performed with the band since 1989, hopefully a tour will follow. It would be nice to hear more pre-It's A Shame About Ray songs performed live.

A semi-reunion of the Replacements (at least on vinyl) will see Paul Westerberg and Tommy Stinson release a 4-song, 10" EP, Songs for Slim limited to 250 copies with proceeds going to benefit the ex-Replacements guitarist, Slim Dunlop who suffered a stroke last February. Founding member/drummer, Chris Mars is not performing on the tracks, but does the cover artwork. Mars recorded his own benefit song for Slim that can be purchased at Chris's website.

Speaking of Minneapolis, reunions and New Year's (eve), I have a cool show from 2004, Mark Olson's first show with members of the Jayhawks since he left the band in 1995. This impromptu set was recorded at the small intimate 400 Bar in Minneapolis and was advertised as Mark Olson and Friends, opening with Mark's solo material followed by Jayhawks songs as he was joined by Gary Louris, Marc Perlman and Tim O'Reagan. This concert with Olson back in the fold was proceeded by a joint tour and album with Louris, then a full Jayhawks reunion with the Tomorrow The Green Grass-era "classic" line-up in 2008, in Spain. This was followed by a extended tour and an album of new material. The sound on this recording is good and clear and the performances as expected were a little rusty, but the enthusiasm of the crowd and the band are evident. Mark Olson's solo material doesn't excite me, but the Jayhawks songs with this lineup and the familiar Mark/Gary vocal harmonies are worth a listen. Sounds like a fun time!

Rock For Democracy 2004

 I didn't quite time this properly, the U.S. election was last week and this concert actually took place back in 2004 when George W. Bush was running for re-election against John Kerry. Leading up to that election a series of Rock for Democracy benefit concerts were held to gather up supporters to get rid of Bush. One such show took place in Minneapolis with a who's who of Twin Cities bands lending their support for this worthy cause.

Bands that night were: The Flops, Iffy, Honeydogs, Jessy Greene, David Poe, Kraig Johnson & The Program, Dana Thompson, Sideways, Ike Reilly Assassination, Martin Devaney, The Jayhawks, Golden Smog and Dave Pirner and Dan Murphy from Soul Asylum. I'm not sure if the other bands were recorded, but fortunately someone did capture the Dave and Dan, Jayhawks and Golden Smog sets and posted it on Dime after the concert in 04. The sets are short, but sweet and one of the highlights has to be when a guy interrupted the Jayhawks during the start of their first song to loudly encourage voters to vote out Bush (click the second link above to read more) because his brother's being sent to Iraq. The Golden Smog set sounds fun with a bunch of covers and a couple of false starts. Even Dave Pirner joined the band for some songs. I didn't hear about as many similar concerts this election compared to 2004 and 2008, except for the usual Bruce Springsteen tour to boost Obama's profile. Unfortunately, the American people had to put up with Republican related concerts with the likes of Kid Rock, Meatloaf and pretty much every country singer/band in the States...yikes!
