Two prototypes of Contra for the NES are currently available on the internet.

Test Prototype
The American localization test prototype is nearly identical to the final version, but with only tiny differences. This prototype was possibly made to play through all of the levels to test them and the ending sequence.
Differences
- The player is invincible throughout the game.
- The player has 99 lives, while the player has 3 lives in the final version.
