Hmmm...
To do:

Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door is a remake of the original 2004 game of the same name. It adds new music, bosses, and lots of quality-of-life improvements, and also sticks a bit closer to the original Japanese script than the initial English translation in a few areas.

Unused Badges

A handful of unused badges are present in the game with fully updated graphics, despite these same badges being unobtainable and unused in the original version of the game.

A handful of badges from the original Paper Mario that were rendered completely redundant with the sequel's badge-stacking feature: Mega Jump, Mega Smash, Mega Quake, and Triple Dip. Triple Dip is fully functional if hacked into Mario's inventory.

A bunch of unused "Partner" versions of other badges. Present are Partner versions of Triple Dip, All or Nothing, Lucky Day, Happy Flower, FP Drain, and Pity Flower.

A totally unused badge that was also present in the original version of the game, in both regular and Partner versions. Given its resemblance to the Damage Dodge badge, it was probably meant for something related to defense or guarding.

Oddities

Hmmm...
To do:
Several oddities were found when going through the game's files. Most of the oddities are outlined in this YouTube video (offline now), but more specific documentation is needed on this. This video includes many items, both unused and inaccessible items, and how they act when picked up. Some notable oddities include Mario's animations not working when picking up a Bowser meat.
  • The description for the Double Pain badge states that wearing multiple copies will further increase the damage Mario takes, which was unused behavior in the original. Similarly, the description for the Power Bounce badge claims that equipping multiple copies will increase the damage the move deals. However, since you can only ever obtain one copy of these badges without abusing duplication glitches, these additional effects go unseen on a normal playthrough.

Regional Differences

Hmmm...
To do:
  • Get rips of the rearranged title themes.
  • See if any other regional differences exist, including whether or not any more changes from the GameCube version are carried over.

Title Theme

As with the GameCube version, the title theme features a different intro in the international version compared to the Japanese one; this is true for both the original and rearranged versions of the soundtracks. Because the remake and Nintendo Switch are both region-free, this is easily observable simply by changing the system language.

Revisional Differences

Hmmm...
To do:
Figure out the details of the v1.0.1 patch beyond the official changelog.

v1.0.0

The initial retail release.

v1.0.1

Released on July 9, 2024. The official changelog is as follows:

  • Fixed an issue preventing game progression where you could get past the fallen tree on Twilight Trail without obtaining Tube Mode first.
    • If this error has occurred and the game was saved on the map with the fallen tree, you'll restart the game repositioned to a spot prior to passing the fallen tree.
    • If the game was saved somewhere farther past the map with the fallen tree, after downloading this update data, please save at the Save Block on the map with the fallen tree, then return to the title screen. When you select the relevant data from the save data selection screen again, you'll restart the game repositioned to a spot prior to passing the fallen tree.
  • Fixed an issue where the controls would no longer respond properly sometimes after hitting an enemy with a hammer on the field.
  • Fixed an issue where battles would sometimes no longer progress properly or status icons would no longer display during battles in cases where players played for a long period of time without closing the software.
  • Fixed an issue where a battle against a Koopa Troopa hidden behind a clump of grass in Petal Meadows would rarely not end properly.
  • Fixed an issue where the controls would rarely not respond properly after using Ms. Mowz's ability on the field.
  • Fixed an issue during battles where the player's turn could sometimes be skipped entirely after using a Double Dip or Triple Dip.
  • Fixed some text issues in English, French, German, Italian, and Korean.
  • Fixed a number of other issues.
