DJMax Portable 3 is a rhythm action game, last of the series to be sold on the PSP platform. It added a new way to play using the analog stick.

As happens with most of the DJMax games, the internal file formats are nearly identical of the EZ2DJ ones, specially the ".STR" animation format. In this game however, all the music videos are real video files.

Unused Graphics

Suggesting by the unused image from the song selection screen, it is possible that in some point of production, a song named "Just Like That" was planned to be playable. It is most likely that this song is the one from the band "Wideband Network", the same band that composed "Armageddon", song used for the ending staff roll . The two songs named "Armageddon" and "Just Like That" are in the same album.

Developer Oversight

Playing With Mono Audio

Like previous PSP games from the series, the keysounds are played in a weird stereo configuration, with one channel having the inverse polarity than the other. This can make the keysounds stand out from the background tracks on headphones, but it comes with a big problem when you use a device with only one speaker (example, in a mobile emulator, or using mono headphones), as the keysounds will be almost completely muted because the two (mostly identical) audio channels will cancel each other out.

Revisional Differences

The US version was released in both UMD and PSN versions between October 14 and October 17. The PSN version removes the DATA INSTALL feature from the options menu. This change reflects the Warning screen as well.

Anti-Piracy

For the UMD version, the game contains two checks to ensure it is being run off the UMD. Upon startup, the game checks the following directory ms0:/PSP/ISO and/or ms0:/ISO (on modded PSP systems, this allows ISO games to be run) on the inserted Memory Stick. If the directory is detected on the inserted Memory Stick, the game crashes.

The second check, a series standard beginning with DJMAX Portable International, checks the reading speed to make sure that the loading times are equivalent to a UMD. If the loading times are faster (likely due to running an ISO off the Memory Stick), then after playing the game for a few minutes, the anti-piracy will, at first add distortion to the background music and randomize the playback speed of the keysounds and SFX audio, after a few additional minutes, the distortion becomes louder and then slowly get higher pitched overtime until turning into a loud, distorted sound effect. Shortly after, the game will flicker the graphics list to randomly skip drawing textures which causes the screen to flash rapidly. After attempting to change the song one or two times, it will lock up the game.

Both checks are completely absent in the PSN versions.
