The example of two recent French and Russian interventions will be taken as example to show how their selfperceptions influence their legitimacy to intervene under a humanitarian discourse.
This dissertation will go beyond the traditional West versus East explanation in order to highlight important specificities of both France and Russia without reducing their identity and actions. Identities will be defined as constructed by the interactions between collective memories and contextual forces, therefore the normative international context will be developed and we will see which memories have been valued to define French
and Russian uniqueness. The importance of norms and ideas in the study of International Relations is going to be shown by proving how they constrain the legitimacy of foreign policy decisions.
This essay attempts to reconsider the concept of bourgeois revolution within the context of diffe... more This essay attempts to reconsider the concept of bourgeois revolution within the context of different regions in pre-Revolutionary France. Through a comparative analysis of Languedoc and Brittany"s class relations within the context of an ongoing Revolution, this essay proposes that orthodox Marxism and Revisionist understandings of the Revolution are inadequate. The Orthodox theory is weakened by the liberal influence of its concept of bourgeois revolution and the Revisionist do not theorise the relation between the different agents. Moreover by not taking into account the international context and the transformation of the state structures, both theories failed to fully explain the origins of the French
