What is Google Workspace for Education?

Google Workspace for Education is a suite of Google tools that empower schools and universities to secure their learning environments, enhance instructional impact, and prepare students for the future. It is available to educational institutions that meet the qualification criteria.

How much does Google Workspace for Education cost?

Google Workspace for Education Fundamentals is free of charge to qualified educational institutions. Google Workspace for Education Standard and Education Plus are paid subscriptions. There are also add-ons sold separately which may be purchased on top of your Workspace edition. For details, go to the Google Workspace for Education website.

How many accounts can I get? Do I need to remove inactive users?

New Education Fundamentals domains come with 2,500 Fundamentals licenses. If you need more licenses, you can Request additional Education licenses. For more information on license availability and assignment best practices, see Getting started with Google Workspace for Education editions.

Education Standard and Education Plus have minimum purchase requirements based on total enrollment which dictate how many licenses you will get. Additionally, paid add-ons are sold on a license by license basis.

How much storage do users get with Google Workspace for Education?
All Education editions have a baseline of 100 TB of pooled storage shared across the institution.
The Education Plus edition and Teaching and Learning add-on include additional storage based on the number of licenses that you purchase. For details, see Compare Education editions.
What is the uptime for Google Workspace services?

Google Workspace core services are guaranteed to be available at least 99.9% of the time. For more information, refer to the Google Workspace Service Level Agreement.

Are nonprofit organizations eligible for Google Workspace for Education?

Nonprofit organizations that are not educational institutions can only apply for the Google Workspace for Nonprofits edition. For more information, refer to Google for Nonprofits.

How long does it take to be approved for Google Workspace for Education?
Approval requests are typically resolved within 14 business days. Review the sign-up process for K–12 or higher institutions.

How do I sign up for Google Workspace for Education?
Can existing email data be migrated to Google Workspace for Education? Can my school's existing authentication system integrate with Google Workspace for Education?

Yes. Google Workspace offers SAML single sign-on (SSO) to integrate with your authentication system. Google Workspace also offers a code library for reference. For details, go to Set up SSO via a third party Identity provider.

How do I train faculty and students to use Google Workspace for Education?

What happens if I have a problem?

How secure is Google Workspace for Education? What scanning or indexing of user data occurs with Google Workspace for Education?

Google Workspace for Education does not collect student data for advertising purposes.

We scan Gmail to keep users’ mail secure. Scanning includes virus and spam protection and is 100% automated. We scan all incoming email, relevant search results, and features, such as Gmail Priority Inbox. For details, go to the Google Safety Center.

Are there ads with Google Workspace for Education?

There are no ads shown in Google Workspace for Education core services. Also, none of the personal information collected in the core services is used for advertising purposes. 

How do I monitor, filter, or archive mail with Google Workspace for Education?

Schools can filter, monitor, and archive mail using Gmail advanced settings. For details, go to Advanced Gmail settings reference for admins.

(U.S. only) Can Google Workspace for Education be used in compliance with the Children's Online Privacy Protection Act (COPPA) of 1998?

Yes. We contractually require that schools using Google Workspace for Education get the parental consent required by COPPA. Our services can be used in compliance with COPPA as long as a school has parental consent. Learn more
