Pazaak is a card game resembling Blackjack. Playing is optional, but it can be a good way to get credits (particularly for light side characters) and some other rewards.

Pazaak Rules[edit | edit source]

This is activated when you acquire a Pazaak deck from one of the following characters:

World Area Source Cost Persuade Force
Taris Upper City Cantina Garouk 50
Dantooine Jedi Enclave Sol'aa 100
Tatooine Cantina Furko Nellis 100 0 0
Kashyyyk Czerka Landing Port Fodo Medoo 75 0 0
Manaan West Central Jolan Aphett 200
Ahto West Gonto Yas 100
Yavin Yavin Station Suvam Tan 100 0

Since some characters can be persuaded using skill or the Force to give you a Pazaak deck for free, there's no real need to buy one on Taris (50 credits may be a trifling sum, but so are the amounts you can wager there) unless you want to minimize travel between worlds.

Journal Entry Added Pazaak Rules
Basics: The object of the game is to have your face up cards total higher than your opponent's hand without exceeding a total of 20. If a player's total is greater than 20 at the end of a turn (a 'BUST'), the opponent wins the set. A player must win 3 sets to win the match and collect the wager.

Equipment: Pazaak is played with a 40 card main deck made up of 4 of each card numbered 1 through 10, and a side deck of up to 10 cards with values ranging from -6 through +6.

Rules of Play:
  1. Each player draws 4 random cards from their side deck to form their HAND. These cards are available to the player for all the sets of the match. Each hand card can only be played once per match.
  2. The first player draws a card from the main deck and plays it face up to begin their turn.
  3. After drawing a card, a player has the option of playing one of the cards from their hand. Playing a card from the hand is optional.
  4. Only one hand card can be played each turn. REMEMBER: A player's 4 card hand must last through all sets of the match.
  5. The player now has the option to STAND or to END TURN. A player who stands cannot draw again or play any more cards from their hand during the set. When one player stands, the opponent can continue to take turns until they either stand or bust.
  6. If a player chooses to end turn they will automatically draw another card at the beginning of their next turn. After one player chooses to stand or end turn, the opponent draws a card to begin their next turn.
  7. Players continue to alternate turns until both players choose to stand, or until one player ends a turn with a total greater than 20 (a 'bust'). REMEMBER: You only lose if you are over 20 at the end of your turn. A player can draw a card from the main deck that puts them over 20, then play a negative card from the 'hand' that brings the total back under 20.
  8. In the case of tie, another set must be played. No new cards from the side decks are drawn.
  9. A player can never have more than nine cards in play during one set. (This includes cards from the hand as well as cards dealt from the deck.) Once you have nine cards in play you automatically stand.
  10. A +/- card played from the side deck must be declared as a positive or negative when played. Once played it cannot be changed.
  11. The first player to win 3 sets wins the match and the wager.

This 'quest' is completed when you play a game of Pazaak for a wager, although you receive no experience for doing so. However, before wagering you should really acquire better cards for your side deck, since the only available cards from which to choose initially are two of each from +1 to +5. Obviously and ideally, you want a side deck of ten +/- cards, some of which can be purchased from merchants:

Card ±1 ±2 ±3 ±4 ±5 ±6 -1 -2 -3 -4 -5 -6 +1 +2 +3 +4 +5 +6
Cost 200 150 125 100 75 50 100 75 25 25 12 5 100 75 50 25 12 5

Cost gives some indication of the usefulness of each card, although with your initial side deck you shouldn't waste credits on + cards (with the possible exception of +6, although there are obviously much better cards).

World Merchant ±1 ±2 ±3 ±4 ±5 ±6 -1 -2 -3 -4 -5 -6 +1 +2 +3 +4 +5 +6
Taris Uriah 2 1
Igear 1 1 1
Dantooine Crattis Yurkal 1 1 1 1 1 1
Sol'aa 1 2 3 1 1 2 2 4 5 2 2 3 3 4 5
Tatooine Junix Nard 2 2 2 2
Manaan Shady Rodian 1 1 2 3 1 1 2 2 4 5 2 2 3 3 4 5
Korriban Mika Dorin 1 1 1 1

Igear sells for 25% less, Mika Dorin for 50% more (but he can only do so once you escape the Leviathan, having been brought on board after leaving the planet on which you found a fourth Star Map). Cards can also be acquired for free elsewhere (after leaving Taris, this is usually via a final wager after defeating your opponents a certain number of times):

World Area Source ±1 ±2 ±3 ±6 -2 -3 +1 +2 +3
Taris Lower Sewers Weapons Locker 1 1
Black Vulkar Base (Garage) Garage Head's Desk 1 1
Davik's Estate Footlockers 1 1 1
Dantooine Jedi Enclave Sol'aa 1 2
Kashyyyk Czerka Landing Port Fodo Medoo 2 2
Manaan West Central Jolan Aphett 1 1 1
Leviathan Prison Block Contraband 1 1 1

Any cards acquired before you have a Pazaak deck aren't displayed in Inventory, and afterwards they're simply added to its side deck, so you cannot sell unwanted cards.

You can replace your entire initial side deck of + cards with the equivalent +/- cards before leaving Dantooine, giving you a much better chance of winning when your opponents draw 4 random cards from the following decks:

Deck ±1 ±2 ±3 ±4 ±5 ±6 -1 -2 -3 -4 -5 -6 +1 +2 +3 +4 +5 +6
1 2 1 2 1 2 2
2 1 1 2 1 1 1 2 1
3 2 4 2 2

Unless otherwise stated, all tutorials and practice games just use deck 1. Most opponents stop playing once you've won a certain number of wagers, or switch to a higher deck as the wager increases. Final wagers aren't always for credits, and can sometimes be for Pazaak cards or another reward:

World Opponent Maximum wager (wins)
Deck 1 Deck 2 Deck 3
Taris Niklos 40 (defeats + 5, 6 consecutive)
Gelrood 40 (∞)
Dantooine Sol'aa 120 (5), ±2 ±3 ±3
Tatooine Kudos 75 (4) 200 (4) 50 (2) + Vibration Cell, 50 (∞)
Xbox 600 (2) + reward, 600 (∞)
Furko Nellis 50 200 500
Kashyyyk Fodo Medoo 75 (4) 200 (4) 600, ±1 ±1 ±2 ±2
Manaan Jolan Aphett 200 (10) ±1 ±2 ±3
Gonto Yas 200 (10)
Korriban Toll Apkar 100 (∞) 100 (∞)
Yavin Suvam Tan 750 (10) + 20% discount

Although you can normally wager for as little as a single credit, it resets to maximum at the start of each match so it's best to wager for the maximum amount. However, even after you replace your entire deck with +/- cards to match opponents using deck 3, you're still at a significant disadvantage: you always draw first from the main deck at the beginning of each set, which means you'll most likely be the first to stand, go bust or use a card, all of which make it more likely that you'll be defeated. It may be exploitative, but you can save game before playing and after winning, and load game after losing to offset this (although there's no need once the wager isn't for credits).

Taris[edit | edit source]

Niklos[edit | edit source]

World Area Maximum wager (wins)
Deck 1 Deck 2 Deck 3
Taris Upper City Cantina 40 (defeats + 5, 6 consecutive)
Niklos: I'm going to enjoy relieving you of your credits almost as much as I'm going to enjoy humiliating you. Ha ha ha.
You have defeated your opponent! You have been defeated.
Credits Received: 1-40 Credits Lost: 1-40
Dialog
Niklos: You were lucky to win the last match. But luck is no substitute for skill in Pazaak. If you are foolish enough to play me again I won't repeat the mistake of underestimating you. Niklos: Pazaak is not for everyone – it requires both nerve and skill. Perhaps you should practice before risking your credits against such a skilled player as myself. Heh heh heh. Unless you like losing?
1. You think it was luck? Let's do it again! 1. Deal the cards – I'm going to wipe that smirk off your face!
Niklos: I'm going to enjoy relieving you of your credits almost as much as I'm going to enjoy humiliating you. Ha ha ha. Niklos: Confidence is inspiring in one who has such a propensity for failure. Foolish, heh, but inspiring.

Once you've defeated him five more times than he's defeated you, he accuses you of cheating and will no longer play (if you play a consecutive game after this occurs then he doesn't accuse you until it has been played, regardless of the result):

Dialog
Niklos: I do not lose at Pazaak very often, but you have made a habit of beating me. I think it is obvious what that means - you cheat!
1. You can't make an accusation like that without proof! 2. It's not my fault you're bad at Pazaak. 3. Don't be a sore loser. I just want to ask you some questions. 4. Goodbye.
Niklos: I haven't been able to figure out how, but I know you're cheating. I'm simply too good to lose this often. And I refuse to play Pazaak with a cheater. Niklos: You cheat me out of my hard earned credits, and you expect me to answer your questions? Niklos: Goodbye, cheater.
Mission: Geez, what a sore loser! I haven't seen this much whining since I gave Zaalbar that bath!
Niklos: You can leave now, cheater. I won't be wasting any more time with you.

If you quit before wagering then this counts as a defeat while costing you nothing, which can allow you to play Niklos indefinitely. However, you can do likewise with Gelrood without needing to keep track of outcomes. The only reason to play Niklos is to unlock dialog.

Gelrood[edit | edit source]

World Area Maximum wager (wins)
Deck 1 Deck 2 Deck 3
Taris Javyar's Cantina 40 (∞)
Gelrood: Excellent... my funds were getting somewhat low.
You have defeated your opponent! You have been defeated.
Credits Received: 1-40 Credits Lost: 1-40
Gelrood: You did well in our last match. But I think your luck may be about to run out. So, do you want to play again? Gelrood: You played well in our last match, but luck just wasn't with you. Do you want to play again? I'm sure you'll do better this time.

In either case you can say you'll play or you'll be going now, but if you've been defeated then you can say you think he's cheating first:

1. I think you're cheating, Gelrood!
Gelrood: How dare you accuse me of cheating! It's not my fault you lost – I'm just a good player with a strong deck. Maybe you just need more practice. Or maybe you just need to buy some better cards. Go talk to Uriah over there. He can sell you some cards to improve your deck. Unless you want to play again right now?

Although you can play indefinitely, you can do likewise later with Toll Apkar in Dreshdae's cantina on Korriban for 2.5 times more (he may use a better deck, but your deck should also be much better at that point).

Dantooine[edit | edit source]

Sol'aa[edit | edit source]

World Area Maximum wager (wins)
Deck 1 Deck 2 Deck 3
Dantooine Jedi Enclave 120 (5), ±2 ±3 ±3

If you acquired the two +/-1 cards freely available on Taris, buy a +/-2 card, two +/-4 cards and two +/-5 cards from Sol'aa for 500 credits in total and then defeat him six times, then you can replace your entire initial side deck of + cards with the equivalent +/- cards before leaving Dantooine: this gives you a realistic chance of defeating Suvam Tan on Yavin Station ten times as early as possible, winning a 20% discount that can save you thousands, if not tens of thousands, of credits.

If you don't want to 'waste' credits buying more cards, then after defeating Sol'aa you can win more from Fodo Medoo in Kashyyyk's Czerka Landing Port, or from Jolan Aphett in Manaan's West Central.

Sol'aa: Let's get started then.
You have defeated your opponent! You have been defeated.
Credits Received: 1-120 Credits Lost: 1-120
Sol'aa: That last game was closer than it seemed. Want to try it again?

After defeating him five times:

Sol'aa: I seem to have run out of funds... If you wish to play again, I could wager these cards instead. Do you wish to play?

After defeating him a sixth time:

Sol'aa: You are truly a great Pazaak player. I don't see how I could possibly beat you.
Sol'aa: As a token of my appreciation for games well played, please take these cards. Perhaps it will serve you better than they did me. Sol'aa: Rest assured that one day I will, though. Is there anything else you wish?

Kudos: I'm up for it. I haven't played you before so let's go slow to start. Low wagers, just to see how we measure up.
Kudos: Bet what you wish. I prefer the sport to the reward.
You have defeated your opponent! You have been defeated.
Credits Received: 1-75 Credits Lost: 1-75
Dialog
Kudos: Very good! You played quite well on that hand. I am impressed. I don't mind losing when the game was skillfully won. Kudos: Well, that's a bit of hard luck, friend. Sorry about your loss. It was good sport though, wasn't it?
Kudos: Obviously you have some ability, and I am glad for the competition. We could play some more and perhaps later we could raise the stakes. Kudos: You are shaping up to be a fine competitor. I hope you keep playing and begin to see the long-term rewards of the game like I do. Kudos: I don't want you to get jaded about your performance. I see a lot of players quit too soon. It's your choice, of course. Kudos: A bad hand or just a misplayed card or two, I guess. I'm sure you'll make up for it. You've beaten me before.
Kudos: Ah, welcome back. Would you care for another game? Very few of my old playing buddies come this way.
Kudos: We'll do another round like before. You made a good showing last time, and I like to keep things friendly. Kudos: You did well last time. I'm glad I found someone to offer decent competition here. There's not much else here to interest me. Kudos: Very well. I admire that you would return to the game after your initial bad luck. Let's keep wagers low until your luck changes. Kudos: I'm glad your loss has not soured you on the game. You've won before, and you likely will again. I like the challenge.

After defeating him four times, you make this for moderate stakes and he switches to deck 2:

Kudos: We'll make this for moderate stakes, just to keep it interesting.
You have defeated your opponent! You have been defeated.
Credits Received: 1-200 Credits Lost: 1-200

After defeating him four more times (eight times in total), you can bet far less but he switches to deck 3. However, on Xbox an interesting amount is up to 600 credits from now on, and you may receive a more random reward for defeating him a tenth time:

Kudos: Feel free to bet an interesting amount. It can add to the thrill of the game.
You have defeated your opponent! You have been defeated.
Credits Received: 1-50 (600 on Xbox) Credits Lost: 1-50 (600 on Xbox)

After defeating him a tenth time:

Dialog
Kudos: Well, I have to say that you have proven a masterful player. I have to reward you, if only for the sport you have given me. Credits are such a hollow prize for good playing... here, you've earned this. It's a trinket that I won in the Dantooine sector.
1. Thanks. I appreciate it. 2. It's about time there was a decent payout.
Kudos: I'd hoped so. You play well, and should keep at it. Now, is there anything else you need? Kudos: Don't taint your win with that attitude. I take no offence, but if the prize is all you want, any losses will be horrible to bear. It is, after all, just a game.
Credits Received: 1-50 (600 on Xbox) Item(s) Received Kudos

You can play him indefinitely, but unless on Xbox you can do likewise with Toll Apkar on Korriban for double the wager against a lesser deck:

Dialog
Kudos: Well, nice to see you again. Would you like another game? You've proven your skill, and I like being challenged.
1. Let's have a game.
Kudos: Well, I'm glad you still want to play. You're good and I enjoy the challenge. It's the best use of my time on this planet.
Kudos: Feel free to bet an interesting amount. It can add to the thrill of the game.
You have defeated your opponent! You have been defeated.
Credits Received: 1-50 (600 on Xbox) Credits Lost: 1-50 (600 on Xbox)
Kudos: I shouldn't be surprised. After all, you have proven your skill many time over by now. It's a pleasure to play you. Kudos: A surprising outcome considering how well you've done in the past. You're capable of far better.

Furko Nellis: Well, since you have never beaten me, we'll make this for a paltry 50 credits. No bargaining now. This is serious. To be fair, I'll use my practice deck as well. I don't want to scare you off, you understand.
1. Let's go. 2. I can't pay that. 3. I've changed my mind.
Furko Nellis: Ha ha! Very good. Now, don't worry if I beat you too harshly. It is a learning experience. Furko Nellis: That is unfortunate. Please, feel free to return when you can. I'm sorry, but I prefer the thrill of the payoff. Furko Nellis: All right, but remember that there isn't much fun on Tatooine that isn't life threatening. Come back if you'd like a game.
You have defeated your opponent! You have been defeated.

Furko Nellis: Hello again. Would you like to have another round of Pazaak? I'd like to try and win back my money. Furko Nellis: Would you like to have another round of Pazaak? Furko Nellis: Ahh, you are back. I hope I didn't scare you off with that loss. Hard blow, but that's the nature of the cards.
Furko Nellis: I mean, I don't want to say that it was beginner's luck, but you should play again to truly get a feel for the game. Furko Nellis: I don't want to sour you on the game. Perhaps another small wager game?
1. I'll play. What is the wager?

If you defeated him, then he switches to deck 2 and ups the stakes:

Furko Nellis: Hmm... you have some rudimentary skills. I think I'll use my second best deck this time and up the stakes. 200 credits will be the wager. I trust you will have the money on hand?
1. You're on. Let's have at it!
Furko Nellis: You won't be so eager in a moment. I promise you.

Furko Nellis: It's only fair, after all. You have won against me twice, but I still think I can teach you a thing or two. Furko Nellis: I don't want to say that your single win was a fluke. Perhaps you would like to play again?
1. I'll play. What is the wager?

If you defeated him, then he switches to deck 3 and ups the stakes again:

Furko Nellis: Well... you have proven quite the opponent, but I think the time has come to end this. You will not win again. I usually only use this deck at tournaments, but I think you're worthy of it. Shall we say... 500 credits on the outcome?
1. Bring it on.

Furko Nellis: However, you'll understand if we don't have any wagers. I... respect your ability too much to insult you by betting on you losing. Furko Nellis: Ah, you did have two promising wins. Would you care to try and take your money back?

After defeating him a third time, if you have another game then you don't have any wagers, but he continues to use deck 3:

Dialog
2. I want to ask you about something else.
Furko Nellis: Something else? I don't think I know about much else. Pazaak is all that I do, right now. I'm sorry. Ask around, I'm sure there are many better sources of information than me.
1. All right, let's have a game. 3. Right. Goodbye.
Furko Nellis: Very good. Just for the sport of it. That's all I can afford. Furko Nellis: Stop by anytime. I'd like to visit my money.

Fodo Medoo: Well, you beat me fair on that hand. That was pretty well played. I made a few mistakes I shouldn't have. Fodo Medoo: I beat you good on that one. Sorry, but that's the way the cards go. Just the luck of the draw, I guess.
Fodo Medoo: Well, looks like you've got some skill. Could be beginner's luck, though. Want another game? Fodo Medoo: That's got to be rough, but things can change fast. You'll want to keep playing, I bet. Never quit on a loss.

If you have another game:

Fodo Medoo: Oh, hello again. Did you want another game? I don't think there will be any ships in for quite a while.
1. Let's have a game.
Fodo Medoo: Sure, you had a good start, so let's keep going. I don't mind the occasional loss to a good player. Fodo Medoo: Sure. I'm not sure I'd keep playing after a start like yours, so maybe we should keep the wager low until you get better.

Fodo Medoo: You're beating me fairly regular. I'm going to have to try a few different strategies from now on. Fodo Medoo: You've beat me before, though, and I bet you want to try again. I always tell people never to quit on a loss.

If you have another game from now on:

Fodo Medoo: Sure. I'd like to make up for you beating me again. Not that I can't afford it. No where else to spend my money. Fodo Medoo: Yeah, I suppose you would want to make up for your last loss. You've won before, so this should be a good game.
Fodo Medoo: Low stakes for now, but we'll raise them later.

Fodo Medoo: You've been beating me a lot lately... I don't know how much longer I can last against you. I don't really even have any more credits left to play... but if you want, I could put a few of my cards as my wager... You up for that?
1. Sure, let's play. 2. Maybe some other time.
Fodo Medoo: Let's see if I can't turn this around... Fodo Medoo: Sure. Come back if you want a last game or two.

After defeating him a tenth time, he leaves and gets back to work:

Dialog
Fodo Medoo: Well, that was quite the victory. What is that, ten, eleven times you've won? Good games, though. Best fun I've had in a while. Heh, maybe I should give you something else. Ten or more wins is considered a tournament victory by some players. Not that I ever get to tournaments... Here, take these. I don't get much time to use them and they don't seem to be doing me much good anyway.
1. That's very sporting of you. 2. It beats taking your paltry surplus credits.
Fodo Medoo: I don't know about that. I just play for fun. Fodo Medoo: You don't have to take them if you don't want. If they're such a hassle, you're the fool for still playing. I'm just killing time.

Toll Apkar: A lucky hand. I will have to try a little harder next time if I am going to beat you... and I will, I am quite sure. Shall we try again? Toll Apkar: Ahhh, it is a good day, sentient, is it not? I always find the vindication of my skill to be pleasing. You have my condolences.
1. You think it was luck? Let's do it again! 1. Deal the cards - I'm not leaving just yet!
Toll Apkar: Excellent. Let us begin. Toll Apkar: As you wish. I certainly can always use the credits.

Yavin Yavin Station 750 (10) + 20% discount

Although you can win up to 7500 credits in total, given his prices and the desirability of his inventory, the 20% discount is potentially worth a lot more...

You have defeated your opponent! You have been defeated.

Suvam Tan: Hm... you're good, I have to admit that. Suvam Tan: Hah! I still got it!
Suvam Tan: But I still think I can beat you a couple more times. You interested? Suvam Tan: But don't feel bad, kid, it happens all the time. Heh. Interested in another game?
1. Let's play. 2. Some other time.

After defeating him ten times:

Suvam Tan: I can't keep up with a player like you. You're just too good. But I respect that. Tell you what, I'll give you a discount on anything in my store 'cause of that. Special deal just for you. Here, have a look.

This deal is four times any cut using the Force (20% vs 5%), and replaces it. If you ask if he's interested in a hand of Pazaak afterwards, he'll only play practice games using deck 1:

Suvam Tan: Sure, if you want. You've already proven that I'm no match for you, but if you want a few free games just to play...
Suvam Tan: That was a good practice game. Interested in another?
