Soulcalibur is a series of nine fighting games, that were released by Namco between 1995 and 2018; its inceptive title, Soul Edge (whose name is that of a demonic sword, around which the series' story revolves), ran on Namco's System 11 hardware, and featured eight fighters, Mitsurugi, Taki, Voldo, Siegfried, Seong Mi-na, Li Long, Sophitia and Rock. On May 16, 1996, Namco released a "fixed" version of the game named Soul Edge Ver. II after a number of players complained that they found the difficulty quite high, and the final boss "unbeatable" (additional changes included things such as the introduction of the character Hwang, who was initially a palette-swap of Mitsurugi in the game's Korean version, to Japanese players with a new move list, Cervantes becoming playable and Guard Impacts and Air Combos getting implemented, along with all the characters' move lists getting changed) - and when it was ported to the Sony PlayStation, Namco tried to register its name as a trademark outside of Japan, but were sued by Edge Games, who claimed that they owned the exclusive right to use the word "edge" in video games (so the US and EU localisations of this port were released under the name Soul Blade). When the series' second title was released in in 1998, it was named Soulcalibur to prevent repeat incidents with Sony PlayStation ports, as were all the subsequent ones, the fifth to ninth of which were also released directly to consoles; Soulcalibur II (2002), Soulcalibur III (2005), Soulcalibur Legends (2007), Soulcalibur IV (2008), Soulcalibur: Broken Destiny (2009), Soulcalibur V (2012), and finally, Soulcalibur VI (2018).
