SCOPIC is a collaborative research project, aiming at the development of naturalistic but cross-linguistically-matched corpus data with enriched annotations of grammatical categories relevant to social cognition (Barth and Evans, 2017: 1). The data were collected using an innovative stimulus-elicitation methodology in a language documentation context that results in exposition, cooperative conversation and narrative data in different task phases (San Roque et al. 2012). This study used sixteen cards with family problem pictures that speakers must describe and organize into a narrative, which also involves description, and problem-solving. The recorded data were transcribed and processed using ELAN, enriched with tag annotations for social cognition research. The current research topics in SCOPIC include social ramifications of depicted events, reported speech and thought, possessed kin terms, and collective group terms. The development of Balinese corpus is still in its initial stage at the moment. We have identified and coded human referents in a small fraction of Badung, Singaraja, Gianyar and Nusa Penida corpus. We plan to investigate social-cognition issues in the range of research topics as done by other members in the SCOPIC consortium. We will discuss how Balinese can provide an interesting and unique angle and promising prospects in terms of social-cognition issues because of the complex caste-based social registers/speech level systems we have in Balinese. We will also report the technical issues in data collection and processing as well as larger linguistic issues such as dialect/register coverage and future directions of the development of multipurpose Balinese corpus. Introduction Social Cognition Parallax Interview Corpus (SCOPIC) provides richly annotated data, focusing on functional categories relevant to social cognition, the social and psychological facts that place people and others within an interconnected social context and allow people to interact with one another (Barth and Evans, 2017: 1). In this corpus, a common set of annotations are used to identify and label instances of language use that relate to social cognition, so as to provide enriched data for typological analysis. Metadata describing the particularities of the annotations for each language provide language-specific descriptions of use and scaffold both language-specific and typological analysis.

One such advertisement is the focus of the current study: Maybelline’s Make It Happen advertisement which conveys strong feministic values via the use of verbal and nonverbal signs. Being a product of mainly women’s interest, the advertisers bank upon the prevalent geopolitics to convey a dominant ideology: Women are equal competitors to men, and they can achieve this without having to forego all that they identify with their ‘being’. The study set out to (1) identify verbal and nonverbal signs in the Maybelline Make it Happen advertisement and (2) examine how the verbal and nonverbal signs present feminism values. The study uses a qualitative method and two theories in analyzing the data: Semiotic Theory by Saussure as cited by Daniel (2002), and Theory of Feminism by Abramovitz (1996). The finding shows that the verbal signs in this advertisement typically use ...

The data were taken from three printed facial wash advertisements. The data source has been taken from the internet. This study used the semiotic hypothesis provided by Saussure (1983: 65) to find out the verbal and non-verbal signs and the theoretical meaning provided by Barthes (1977) to find out the meaning of verbal and non-verbal signs in the facial wash ads. Sembiran Balinese, also known as Bali Aga, is a conservative mountain dialect of Balinese spoken by around 5,000 speakers in the Sembiran village, 30 km east of Singaraja northern Bali. The language and its culture reflect Bali in antiquity (Ardika, et al. 1991; Ardika, et al. 1997), with the language quite distinct from Lowland Balinese (Bali Dataran), for example in terms of its pronominal system and the absence of speech level system (Astini 1996, Sedeng 2007, Arka & Sedeng 2018). The study is based on the data collected through questionnaires focusing on subjective views of ethno-linguistic vitality such as in-/out-group interactions and domains of language use in contemporary multilingual settings, supported by ethnographic data. The analysis makes use of the current development in the sociolinguistics of vita...
