A Christmas Story: cute movie
I had heard so much about that movie that, when I was looking for a Xmas movie to inaugurate our new TV, I chose it. I personally wouldn't watch it over and over again, but it's worth a look.
Young Ralphie, in his Indiana town in the early 40s (with, strangely, no mention of the war), wants one thing, and one thing only for Christmas: a Red Ryder Carbine Action 200-shot Range Model air rifle. He devices so many ways to get his parents to learn about it and give it to him. We also his life around town, in class, at the mall, with the village bully, etc.
It's not a movie made for the Oscars; it's a movie made to please crowds AND especially children. The story is narrated by adult Ralphie, and his train of thought is hilarious. But the best part is when his imagination runs wild: from thinking his teacher will give him an A+ for writing about the air rifle to seeing her as the Wicked Witch of the West, to being in a Western and attack thieves with his air rifle... There's also something heart warming about seeing him snap at the bully. I wish I had had that courage.
In short, A Christmas Story is excellent entertainment for this period of the year. While simplistic, the scenario gives us a break from our crazy world. But I have to wonder about some anachronisms: were cars THAT widespread pre-WW2? The environment looks more life early 50s with all the lights and very large malls
