While effective self-management is fundamental to achieve optimum control of blood sugar only few individuals engaged in the recommended levels of diabetes self-management practices Content Outline: The incidence of diabetes has increased worldwide over the past 25 years, with Trinidad and Tobago ranking among the countries with the most prevalent and fastest-growing number of cases of this chronic and potentially life-threatening disease. While effective self-management is fundamental to achieve optimum control of blood sugar and reduce the risk of complications related to diabetes, only few individuals with diabetes engage in the recommended levels of diabetes self-management practices Results: Majority of the study participants were females (67.7%), within the 46–55 years age group, 60% of patients were fr...

Learning Activity: LEARNING OBJECTIVES EXPANDED CONTENT OUTLINE 1. To assess the existing Knowledge of diabetic foot care among the subjects. Several studies have shown that a majority of people with diabetes do not receive guidelinerecommended foot care, including regular foot examinations. Most lower limb amputations in patients with diabetes are preceded by a foot ulcer, whose risk factors apart from Peripheral Vascular Disease (PVD) and Peripheral Neuropathy (PN), are barefoot walking, inappropriate footwear, poor foot hygiene and delay in seeking medical attention. Hence assessing the knowledge of diabetic foot care among diabetics will support to put the knowledge in...

However, this transition increased screen time and made e-learners more vulnerable to biopsychosocial issues. This study aimed to assess the impact of online learning on the eyes and mental health of medical science students, including those pursuing MBBS, Nursing, Optometry, Pharmacy, and Veterinary degrees during the COVID-19 lockdown period. A cross-sectional quantitative study was conducted, collecting online data from 182 samples using a socio-demographic data sheet (SDVS), Computer Vision Symptom Scale (CVSS 17), and the Perceived Stress Scale (PSS 10). Results revealed that most students spent between 2 and 4 h and >7 h on electronic devices before and during COVID-19, respectively, with many reporting moderate mental stress and eye strain. A weak positive correlation (r = 0.204 at p < 0.05) was found between perceived stress and eye strain...

METHOD: A cross-sectional survey was conducted in June 2019. A 32-item self-administered questionnaire was provided to 40 registered nurses to assess their knowledge and compliance levels to hand hygiene practices. RESULTS: All respondents were females. The results showed that 45% of the nurses had excellent knowledge, 27.5% had good knowledge on hand hygiene, while 27.5% had an average knowledge level. There was a statistically significant association between their knowledge level and their age, years of experience, length of time in the NICU and their level of education (p≤0.05). There was no statistically significant association between their compliance level and their socio-demographics (p≥0.05). CONCLUSIONS: Nurses’ knowledge levels were rated as good and so were their p...

METHODS: A descriptive quantitative case study was undertaken using all the registered nurses in the Island Hospital. The study utilized a modified pre-validated instrument from the International Labour Office (ILO), International Council of Nurses (ICN), World Health Organization (WHO), and Public Services International (PSI). Analysis was done using the SPSS version 20. The result was presented as frequencies. RESULTS: Eighty-one (81) respondents completed and returned their copies of the questionnaire giving a response rate of 97.5%. Also, 85.2% of the respondents reported having moderate bullying experience while 14.8% reported having maximum bullying experience. As it relates to the self-reported support for bullying, 60...

Methods: A descriptive design utilizing survey method was used. A sample of 60 RNs, from a tertiary care hospital in South Trinidad were recruited using stratified sampling technique. A blue print showing the distribution of items (Pathogenesis, Predisposing and preventive factors), was prepared prior to the construction of self-administered knowledge questionnaire on MRSA – 30 Items and adaptation Scale on MRSA – 20 Items. Adaption Scale was designed to analyse the level of compliance of RNs practice to MRSA protocol. Data were analysed using SPSS Version 19. Results: Majority of the RNs (72.41%) scored on pathogenesis of MRSA (mean 6.52+1.65). 56.78% of RNs demonstrated knowledge on preventive factors of MRSA. However only 51.33% had knowledge on predisposing factors of MRSA. More than half (34) of the staff scored on the undecided section of the adaption scale whether nurses follow correct protocol for MRSA prevention. Most RNs agreed that they maintain proper hand hygiene. However within the Predisposing factors a large number of RNs (41) were unsure of maintaining hand hygiene, which was contradictory to responses regarding hand hygiene. A positive correlation was seen between knowledge scores of RNs and their place of work (p=0.001). RNs in surgical wards demonstrated better overall knowledge of MRSA, in comparison to RNs working in medical wards. One-way analysis of variance (ANOVA) between level of education and knowledge of MRSA among RNs was found to be significant at 2.432 (p=0.03). Conclusion: It was concluded that level of RNs knowledge on MRSA was inadequate, which translated into their non-adaptation of

The subjects comprised of sixty (60) NRNs who had participated in a mentoring program within the past eighteen (18) months and currently employed at the selected General Hospital. A blue print showing the distribution of items was prepared prior to the construction of self-administered questionnaire on job satisfaction (22 items) and a modified Casey-Fink Graduate Nurse Experience Survey (2006) to measure clinical skills and transition (24 items) was used to collect data. Convenient sampling was used to select 60 NRNs who met the selection criteria (undergone mentorship programme) and who volunteered for the study. Data was analyzed using SPSS Version 21. Results: 86.7 % of study participants had informal mentors, while 13.3 % had formal mentors. 70.0 % of study participants indicated that a mentor was assigned to them for three months, while 30.0 % indicated that a mentor was assigned to them for six months. NRN's were able to achieve job satisfaction, acquire clinical nursing skills and transition into the practitioner's role more significantly, as the duration of mentorship increased. 41.7 % of NRNs indicated that the mentorship program had given them job satisfaction. NRNs who served in surgery, paediatrics, obstetrics and other common wards were found to have significantly better job satisfaction than those who served on the medical wards. 53.3 % of NRNs indicated that the mentorship program had helped them develop clinical nursing skills. 57.1 % of NRNs indicated that mentoring had helped them transit into the role of a practitioner. NRNs serving in surgery, obstetrics, urology and other common wards were significantly lagging in development nursing skills and transition into the practitioner role, than those working in medical wards. Conclusion: The NRNs who received formal mentorship had achieved job satisfaction, developed clinical nursing skills and transitioned to the practitioner role more significantly. NRNs job satisfaction, development of clinical nursing skills and transition to the practitioner role was closely related to demographic variables such as specialty in the profession, formal mentoring and the length of the mentorship experience in the mentoring program.
