Sunrise with Sundog
It is a cold December morning, but the day is getting off to a beautiful start. Saw the sunrise through the dining room window and had to go outside for a couple more photos.
We just passed the winter solstice, so this about as far south as the sun rises.
My dog Cocoa facing into the sunrise...
and a sunrise sundog facing back toward us.
It was so, so cold taking these few photos! But then I pulled on the hand-me-down Carhartt overalls my little sister just sent me and I was snug and warm doing chores afterward! Thanks, Rita!

Morning Moonset
This morning, I got up a bit earlier than usual, but not as early as Rog - he had an early morning meeting. I was just settling in to sip my coffee before chores when Rog called me up from his cell phone on his way into town - he said, “Go out and look at the moon!” I bundled up and grabbed my camera - and found it glowing above the horizon as I came around to the north side of the house - it is now almost as far north as it gets.
The December full moon is called the Full Cold Moon or the Full Long Night’s Moon. Long nights is right. Four more days until winter solstice, and then the days start getting longer!
The moon setting above Douglas.
I quickly did the chores, then came in just in time to see the sun rising through the dining room window.

The Promise of a Pot of Gold?
Last evening as we went out to the garden to pick the raspberries, a rainbow arched across the sky.
Gordita smiled happily at the scene.
As usual, Zinnie hung out with Gordita while we plucked the berries.
Pretty sweet to pick berries under a rainbow! Could it be a happy omen?!? We have just launched our ambitious Kickstarter campaign to raise funding for a certified kitchen, which will allow us to expand our baking operations, host events with farm-fresh food, and offer culinary classes. We have been working toward this ever since we moved to the farm almost 6 years ago. Now, in 30 days we need to raise $25,000 to make this dream a reality! We are stunned by the generous support we have received in the first two days - approaching 10% of our goal! ---but we still have a long way to go. Will there be a pot of gold at the end of this rainbow?
To see our Kickstarter video and campaign details, or maybe even make a pledge and receive a fun farm-related reward, visit the Squash Blossom Farm Kitchen Kickstarter page.
Thank you! I promise to post relentlessly about our progress!

Sunshine/Moonshine
A few miscellaneous images inspired by the play of light.
Shadows and reflections on the kitchen counter from the steamer.
Morning coffee shadows on the cupboards.
A house spider at work in the morning sun (yes, we have a house spider or two!)
It has been so rainy lately we are now officially out of drought. Silvery wet road on the way to town after the rain stopped.
Last night's moon - two days after the super moon, but still pretty super to me.
Moon caught in the branches.
Farmyard at night, lit by the moon and the yard light.

A Marvelous Morn for a Moonset
We were just sitting down into our window chairs to enjoy our morning coffee and noticed that the nearly full moon was setting through the trees.
So, we abandoned our coffee, slipped into our boots and jackets and ran out to the prairie to watch the moon set.
Bushwhacking through the brush to the road, I just caught the early morning moon sinking over Douglas before the sky became too bright. Too bad all those folks driving to work couldn't see the beautiful moon behind them.

Early Market Morning
Saturday morning at 6:15 a.m. when Rog and Bethany left for the Farmer's Market, I was up too, staying home to milk the cow and mind the farm store. It was still too early to do those things, so I took a few photos.
The sun hadn't yet risen, but the eastern sky had a glowing band of light at the horizon.
Gourdita the Scarecrow (Bethany named her that because she is a gourd- head) always smiles at the morning. She has a new outfit this summer - Calvin Klein designer overalls form the thrift store.
Her job is to guard the ripening strawberries
and the gooseberries.
The cows were already intently grazing on the hill. Only Lindy paid any attention to me, curious about the camera. He is growing so fast into a handsome little steer!

Blue Sky and Sunshine!
We have a beautiful, clear blue sky today!
Although it was dismaying to get dumped on by so much snow the past few days when we were finally down to bare ground in some spots, the fresh, clean blanket of snow is undeniably beautiful.
The Adirondack chairs look cushiony and inviting...if you are wearing a snowsuit.
The clay bread oven could be mistaken for an igloo.
Birds are everywhere, singing cheerily...sounds like an optimistic sign that spring will be coming one of these days.
