Help:Archiving posts

From Inkipedia, the Splatoon wiki
← Return to Help:Contents

This page details how to add posts to Inkipedia's Twitter and Tumblr archives.

Eligible posts

Inkipedia strives to archive all Splatoon-related posts made by Nintendo on the social media platforms Twitter and Tumblr. User-generated (non-Nintendo) posts may additionally be added if the information within is being used as a citation on the wiki.

If you're adding an image from Twitter or Tumblr to the wiki for any purpose, you must archive the related post as-is.

User-generated posts that are not in some way wiki relevant are not eligible for archival. If a previously archived user-generated post is not used on the wiki at all, the post should be removed from the archive.

General notes

Make sure you're listing a post's UTC timezone timestamp.

Profile picture handling

When uploading a user-generated (non-Nintendo) post, you must upload the account owner's profile picture. Before uploading, make sure the image hasn't already been uploaded. If not, download the profile picture then upload it to the wiki.

Profile picture files should be named in the following format: username Twitter/Tumblr PFP.png/jpg.

For Twitter Twitter profile pictures, navigate to the URL https://twitter.com/username/photo (example) to download the icon.

For Tumblr Tumblr profile pictures, you must be logged in to a Tumblr account:

  • Open the related blog in dashboard view.
  • Open the blog icon in a new tab to download it.

If the Tumblr account has their profile picture set to not display:

  • Reblog any post from that account to a blog.
  • Select the account (👤 icon) menu option.
  • Select the blog to which you reblogged the post.
  • The account's profile picture should now display on the left-hand side of the dashboard.
  • Open the blog icon in a new tab to download it.

How to archive a Twitter Tweet

In June 2023, restrictions were applied to the ability to view Tweets while logged out, and as such it may be necessary to sign in to a Twitter account to view Tweets. If you're not able to view a Tweet, feel free to ask others to archive it in your stead.

  • Navigate to the Twitter archive.
  • Select the appropriate year and month within the infobox's dropdown menu.
  • On the designated month article, navigate to the correct day section.
  • Click the edit button.
(If there are other posts in that section, you must determine the correct sequence of Tweets based on their timestamps; Tweets are archived in the order they were posted).
  • Paste the following template code:
{{Twitter archive
|note=
|pfp=
|displayname=
|username=
|content=
|image=
|image1=
|image2=
|image3=
|date=
|original=
}}
  • Fill out the template with information from the Tweet you're archiving.
    • Remove the note and/or images parameters if the Tweet in question needs no notes or has less/no images attached, respectively.
    • Detailed information on how to fill out each parameter can be found in the template's documentation page.
  • Once done, click "show preview" and double-check everything, cross-referencing the original Tweet.
  • If the Tweet contains image or video media, you must upload such before finalizing your edit (detailed in the next section).
  • Finalize your edit.

Uploading Tweet image and video media

It's recommended to go through the Tweet archive and image upload process step-by-step nearly simultaneously in two tabs of your browser, as image uploads require a reference generated by the Tweet archive while the Tweet archives require the image upload filename(s).

  • Download the media in question to your device. Follow these steps:
    • For images:
      • Open the target image in a new tab.
      • Append orig in the source URL. For example, a name=large at the end of the URL would become name=orig.
      • Press enter/go.
      • Download the resulting file.
    • For videos:
      • Use an external video downloading tool, or request a staff member make use of the "upload via URL" function.
      • Most official promotional videos uploaded to Twitter by Nintendo are accompanied by an equivalent 1:1 Youtube video upload; when-ever possible, substitute with an embedded link to the Youtube video via the following code:
<embedvideo service="youtube" dimensions="300" description="channelname">link</embedvideo>
  • Navigate to the upload page.
  • Click the Browse... button and attach the file.
  • Fill out the file template appropriately.
  • For the source parameter, you must input the reference tag generated by the tweet archive template:
    • The reference is in this format: {{TWI}} [[Inkipedia:Twitter archive/year/month#tweet reference number|@account on Twitter]]
    • The best way to achieve such is to go through the Tweet and image archive process nearly simultaneously in two tabs of your browser.
    • Fill out the Tweet archive information up until the image portion, then select "show preview"; the reference tag should be generated within the preview.
    • Copy the reference tag from the preview.
    • Paste it in the source= parameter section in the file template of the image upload tab.
    • Copy the image filename you have designated for your new upload.
    • Paste it in the image= parameter of the Tweet archive tab.
  • Upload the file.

How to archive a Tumblr Tumblr post

  • Navigate to the Tumblr archive.
  • Select the appropriate year and month within the infobox's dropdown menu.
  • On the designated month article, navigate to the correct day section.
  • Click the edit button.
(If there are other posts in that section, you must determine the correct sequence of posts based on their timestamps; posts are archived in the order they were posted).
  • Paste the following template code:
{{Template:Tumblr archive
|pfp=
|username=
|content=
|image=
|image2=
|image3=
|image4=
|image5=
|image6=
|image7=
|image8=
|image9=
|image10=
|date=
|original=
|tag=
|tag2=
|tag3=
|tag4=
|tag5=
|tag6=
|tag7=
|tag8=
|tag9=
|tag10=
}}
  • Fill out the template with information from the post you're archiving.
    • Remove the images and/or tags parameters if the Tweet in question has no/less tags or images than listed, respectively.
      • As of March 2024, an individual Tumblr post may have 30 tags and 30 images attached. The Tumblr archive template supports just 10 of each; additional images may be added via inserting image links in the content= parameter.
    • Detailed information on how to fill out each parameter can be found in the template's documentation page.
  • Once done, click "show preview" and double-check everything, cross-referencing the original post.
  • If the post contains image or video media, you must upload such before finalizing your edit (detailed in the next section).
  • Finalize your edit.

Uploading Tumblr image and video media

It's recommended to go through the Tumblr post archive and image upload process step-by-step nearly simultaneously in two tabs of your browser, as image uploads require a reference generated by the post archive while the post archives require the image upload filename(s).

  • Download the media in question to your device. Follow these steps:
    • Log in to a Tumblr account.
      • It's recommended you to set up an otherwise new sideblog or altogether new account that will contain only the relevant image-containing posts; this speeds up the export process. A blog with over 500 posts and/or drafted posts will likely be at least 1GB in size when exported, requiring more time to process.
    • Reblog the relevant post(s) containing the images to a blog.
    • Select the account settings menu (⚙ gear icon).
    • In that menu, there should be a "blogs" section in the lower right-hand corner.
    • Locate then click your blog name (the blog upon which you reblogged the relevant post).
    • Scroll to the bottom, click the "Export [blog name]" button.
    • The export process may take some time to generate a download; the associated account will receive an e-mail when it's ready.
      • If the blog contains exclusively immediately relevant posts as recommended, the backup should be ready within 30 minutes.
    • Once done, select the new "download [blog name]" option on the blog's settings page.
    • Unzip the .zip file.
    • Open the media folder.
    • Locate the relevant images. There may be duplicates; select the largest available resolution.
  • Navigate to the upload page.
  • Click the Browse... button and attach the file.
  • Fill out the file template appropriately.
  • For the source parameter, you must input the reference tag generated by the archive template:
    • The reference is in this format: {{TBR}} [[Inkipedia:Tumblr archive/year/month#post reference number|account on Tumblr]]
    • The best way to achieve such is to go through the post and image archive process nearly simultaneously in two tabs of your browser.
    • Fill out the post archive information up until the image portion, then select "show preview"; the reference tag should be generated within the preview.
    • Copy the reference tag from the preview.
    • Paste it in the source= parameter section in the file template of the image upload tab.
    • Copy the image filename you have designated for your new upload.
    • Paste it in the image= parameter of the post archive tab.
  • Upload the file.
