About DeskProto

DeskProto is a 3D CAM program for 3-axis, 4-axis and 5-axis CNC milling machines. It can import 2D vector files (DXF, SVG, EPS, AI), 3D geometry files (STL, DXF) and bitmap files (any digital image), calculate CNC toolpaths for that design, simulate the result, and finally export a toolpath file for the machine that you selected - a long list of supported machines is present. DeskProto is available in our different editions: Free, Entry, Expert and Multi-Axis. The last three need a paid license, hobbyist users can buy a low-cost hobby license .

    "DeskProto"

    Edited 2024-12-12

Pros: Simple to use - the wizards really take the guesswork out of things for beginners.
Scaleable - you can be as much in control of the process as you wish for, so it grows well with you as you grow in confidence

Cons: I am unhappy that they have only just released the V-Carve solution. I have not yet upgraded to the Version 8 that incorporates this, as I have got used to making do with FEngrave. This would have been a nice to have before trying to go the hard route.
I understand that tool paths can be broken, it would be nice (but potentially impossible to predict) to know this before embarking on a visualisation that just sits doing nothing for hours. Note I am still on V7, so this may be addressed in V8

Overall: Would definitely happily recommend this to anybody with a CNC; even if you are comfortable enough to write your own GCode or script an excel document to write it for you, sometimes just banging the image or model into the app and having a functional gcode ready to roll is nice.
