    "ANSYS vs NASTRAN"

    Posted 2024-02-21

Pros: Nastran has a loyal following by structures engineers who have invested much time and effort into using it. Nastran is a generally accepted tool in stress. Ansys has aggressively developed its software and is now by far the largest company in simulation. Ansys can solve much larger problems using solids without reduction to 2D. Ansys is both easy to use and very powerful.

Cons: Nastran is outdated and lacks decent pre and post processing. Its unstable for large linear problems and for nonlinear problems. Using Ansys requires constantly fighting the status quo and inertia of Nastran users in stress.

Overall: Ansys beats Nastran in assembling and solving large assemblies of solid models. Nastran has traditionally been used more in structures for 2D linear analysis because of computing resources. But now resources are cheaply available removing that constraint.
