Harry Potter and the Gemino Spell - Singular and Plural

Harry Potter and the Gemino Spell

I love Harry Potter! I've read all of the books and watched all of the films. I am more than a little saddened at the demise of the stories of the boy wizard. So I decided to keep the legend alive myself. Yesterday I posted a new resource in time for Hallowe'en - Harry Potter's Transfiguration Class, which helps children "transfigure" words into new words (compound words to you and me...).

I wanted to do something with plurals - always a tricky area, especially with those words that do not take a straightforward "s". But how to link it in with HP? Then I remembered the scene in "Deathly Hallows", where Harry, Hermione and Ron break into the Lestrange vault in Gringotts bank. The treasure that they seek is hidden in the vault and within reach, but the contents of the vault have been cursed with the Gemino curse, which duplicates items when they are touched, thus creating lots of worthless fakes and protecting the original. Hmmm, singular to plural - and hey presto, there's my link!

This pack contains lots of great activities to help children learn and practise the rules for  plurals. It has activities for turning singular words into plurals and vice versa. There is an activity on those tricky plural changes, and a very useful skill check where the children can test their learning. I have also included a game of "Go Fish" with over 40 words to match up.

The pack is available in my TN and TPT stores right now. Click on the pictures to go there. If you enter my Giveaway, you could even win yourself a copy or two... You can find out more by clicking the Giveaway picture below. Good luck!

Currently... and a Sale

Where has the time gone...?

I've just noticed that it's been almost a week since my last post. Where has the week gone? When I look back I can't seem to work out how I got from last Sunday to today.. I guess that's what this job does to you - in the nicest possible way of course.

Currently

Although I haven't been very good at keeping my own blog current this week, I am following lots of you, both on the web and by email. I look forward to receiving your updates every day, and I read them all. It's been great reading all your "Currently" posts (thanks once again to Farley for arranging it and for the fantastically designed form), so here's mine:

Sad news in Wales this week, as 5 year old April Jones was abducted from outside her home in a small rural town of only 2000 people. A suspect was arrested on Tuesday and was today charged with April's abduction and murder, although the search for her still goes on. It's every parent's nightmare and our thoughts are with them.

My car is an enigma. It's a Citroen Pluriel convertible - very pretty to look at. But it leaks like a sieve - and not in the places you'd expect... The roof is absolutely fine. The water pours (and I mean pours...) in through the boot lock (truck if you're in the US) - hence the water feature every time I open the boot..

Finally, the book I've chosen is absolutely wonderful. It's the story of Ferdie, who is very worried that his beautiful tree may be sick because it is losing all its leaves. He does everything he can to try to save the leaves - including sticking them back on - and Ferdie feels that all hope for his tree is lost when the last leaf floats to the ground. But a glorious sight awaits him the next day. Your children will love it!

What do you think about a sale...?

I haven't had a sale for a while - haven't really had a reason. But then I thought, heck, I don't need a reason to spread a little love. So this weekend I'll be opening my stores for just a short while and letting you loose on a few bargains. It may mean breaking the unwritten rule and blogging twice in one day, but watch out for the announcement.

Book of the Month Linky Party - The Apple Pie Tree

Hey all!

Today has been mad! Lately I've been getting very annoyed with my environment - it's always so busy that sometimes housework and stuff takes a back seat. I'm a self-confessed Obsessive Compulsive, and this weekend I really needed to get down to it - before I went well and truly bonkers! With a nice early start at 8.30am, after several mugs of Starbucks to get me going, I got stuck in. First job, clean out the cupboard to make room for the towels that have been hanging around homeless for a few weeks. Then, the Great Autumn Sort kicked off. With no storage, I had to be ruthless. I filled four huge sacks with clothing! I kid you not, clothing with swing tags still on - Jasper Conran, Julien Macdonald, you name it, it was there - and all brand new! The charity shop is in for a treat tomorrow... It's taken all day, but I can finally walk around the house without screaming or wanting to run away... Next weekend it's the garden's turn for a tidy-up...

I hopped across to Tammy's place this evening. Those of you who know me through my blog will know that I love books. I'm filling up my bookshelf here and always love to take opportunities to tell you about great books that I think the kids will love. So Tammy's linky is right up my street. It's all about sharing ideas on great books that we can all use in the classroom. This month Tammy wants us to share books that are MUST READS for the month of OCTOBER. So, these books should be an "October" theme that you do in your class. (Fall, Pumpkins, Halloween, etc) It does not have to be seasonal but it needs to be something you are reading this month!:) If you have more than one, share those too.  Post pictures of your books and activities you do with your class:). Here is the link to Tammy's blog where you can get all the details.

I linked up with my favourite book of the moment - The Apple Pie Tree by Zoe Hall. I have blogged about it before here

The packet provides a huge selection of activities that you can teach as a stand-alone unit, or use separately in Literacy/Writing Centres. Everything you need is there, and can just be printed off and used with minimum  preparation and effort. It includes:
  • Before reading inference using the cover as a prompt
  • After reading discussion prompt cards
  • Record sheets
  • Editing sentences
  • Alphabetical ordering
  • Phoneme count
  • Syllable search
  • Sensory poem writing activity

  • Story sequencing - the tree
  • Story sequencing - baking a pie
  • Story sequencing - the Robin family

I Love the Fall and Linky Parties

It's been one mad whirl of activity this week - Monday band rehearsal, tonight Welsh class, tomorrow choir. Last night was the only down time I've had in a while - and even that was filled with driving here, there and everywhere in Mum's Taxi... It's 11.35pm and I'm up early tomorrow, so this is going to be a very quick post.

I've been having a nose at lots of blogs over the last few days and I absolutely love what I see! I just have to share with you. I never fail to be impressed by the creativity of my fellow teachers all around the world - it's great to feel supported and part of such a fantastic community. So here's a little thumbs up to some of the linky parties I've come across - do check them out if you can and pick up lots of new ideas and a few freebies along the way.

Teacher 2 Teacher is hosting a Fall linky party with lots of links to wonderful products available from TPT.

Here's another great Fall Linky from Cynthia at 2nd Grade Pad. Hop across and check it out.

Fall Blog Hop and Animated Story Free to a Good Home..

Fall Has Arrived - Or Should I Say Autumn...

It's finally here...

Yes, Fall has officially arrived. And yes, I should say autumn coming from the UK. But Fall has a much more magical ring to it I think. My favourite season of the year with so much going on and that glorious feeling of change in the air... One of the joys of my previous school was that the city was (and is) famous for cider making. The city boasts a cider factory - Bulmers - which has been making cider there for well over 150 years. At this time of year, the air is filled with the smell of crushed apples, distilled apples and apple pie - glorious!

This Weekend I have Mostly Been...

..blog hopping, and enjoying every minute. I have found some wonderful new blogs that I will be sure to visit time and time again. It's great to make new friends and to see all the wonderful work you're all doing out there. It's also great to know that I'm not on my own here - it's so easy to fall into the trap of thinking that there's no-one at the other end of your blogs and forget that there are so many like-minded people who get so much from keeping in touch and sharing ideas. Thank you all!

I hope you've all had chance to join up with Heather's Fall Blog Hop - there really is a wealth of great stuff to pick up and a lot of new firneds to make. The Linky Party runs through until 30th September, so there's still lots of time to link up. Just click on the banner to find out more.

I Love A Freebie - Who Doesn't ...?

For those of you who linked up with the Fall Blog Hop, you might have seen and downloaded my little contribution - a free Hallowe'en flip book based on "Five Little Pumpkins". To compliment the book, I've now just finished the slideshow. It's fully animated to keep the kiddos totally engrossed. Plenty of time has been left between the sentences so that developing readers can take their time to sound out and blend. There is a little surprise on the last page, with a scary spider scuttling its way across the page, and on the credits page a Hallowe'en bat flies across the page to deliver its message - The End.

I had huge fun making this one. I loved playing around with the animations and page transitions. I'd love for a few of you to test drive the slideshow, so if you fancy a freebie in exchange for your views, just drop me a line below. The first three of you to comment will get the slideshow.

It's bed time for me but not so for you, so all that's left to be said tonight is enjoy the first day of Fall!

Fall Picture Book - The Apple Pie Tree. And a 50% Sale

Hello friends!

Season of Mists and Mellow Fruitfulness... (J. Keats)

At this time of year, we all turn our minds to autumn - changing seasons; the wonderful paintbox colours of the leaves, nuts, berries and gorgeous fruits;the excitement of Hallowe'en and Thanksgiving; and, for us in the UK, Bonfire Night with toffee apples, candy floss, fireworks, sparklers, hot dogs... I will always remember, with amazement and delight, stumbling upon a farmers' market in the middle of New York City at this time of the year - stalls full of ripe apples, plump pumpkins and gourds in a catalogue of shapes and colours, scarecrows, wonderful autumn smells... I could wax lyrical about autumn all night.

Classroom Ideas

This season is just perfect for the classroom - so many activities, so much inspiration. Last year, we made a huge window display of a bare tree, and decorated it with red, gold and brown leaves, and giant acorns. Each child wrote a word or two on their leaf or acorn to describe autumn. I had some great responses from the kids (Yr 3, so G2) - chocolate brown, nutty caramel, misty mornings. We laminated the leaves and added them to the tree, some on the branches, some floating down to the ground, most in a pile on the ground with a squirrel asleep underneath. In time, the tree became a winter tree, when all the leaves were replaced with snowflakes, baubles and decorations. Spring brought leaves and blossom, and summer saw the tree in full leafy regalia.

Crispy, Juicy, Tangy, Delicious, Golden..... Apples!

The obvious choice for teaching about autumn is the apple, especially as the end of this month sees the birthday of Johnny Apple Seed. Last week I posted about an apple packet that I had been working on. The packet is based on the wonderful book "The Apple Pie Tree" by Zoe Hall, which I have added to my shelf as a recommended read. Check it out here.

The Best Bit - Apple Activities at a Discount!

The packet provides a huge selection of activities that you can teach as a stand-alone unit, or use separately in Literacy/Writing Centres. Everything you need is there, and can just be printed off and used with minimum  preparation and effort. It includes:

  • After reading discussion prompt cards
  • Record sheets

Apples in the Fall - and a FREEBIE

There's a definite nip in the air.. We are having a bit of an Indian Summer in the UK (it won't last for long...), and it's been warm for the last week. Isn't it just typical that it rained for the whole of the summer break butthe sun has come out just as we all go back to school...!

Anyway, I know that lots of you love teaching an apple theme at this time of year. I LOVE autumn - it's my favourite season. So I had a lot of fun pulling this apple themed literacy unit together. It uses Zoe Hall's "The Apple Pie Tree" as a prompt and is crammed full of great activities that can be taught as part of a thematic unit or used as stand-alone activities in your writing centres. The poetry lesson is especially good - I used it myself going back a few years and although the children groaned when I told them they were going to write their own poem, they absolutely loved going through the hands-on process using their senses. I'd love to see some examples of your children's work if you decide to use it.

I'm hoping to follow this one up with a couple more seasonal units, including Johnny Apple Seed and of course, Hallowe'en. Oh I do love this time of year...!

If you're interested you can get this unit through my TN and TPT shops by clicking the pictures below.

I would love for my unit to be reviewd - it's important to me that everything is so-so. So for the first two people to leave a comment here on my blog, I will send you a free copy of "Apple Pie Tree"
