The Volta River and its drainage basin

The Volta River is a river which is mostly in Ghana. It drains into the Gulf of Guinea and Atlantic Ocean. It has three main tributaries – the Black Volta, White Volta and Red Volta.

Water drains into the Volta from most of Ghana, most of Burkina Faso, and parts of Benin, Ivory Coast, Mali, and Togo. In 1964, the Akosombo Dam was built. This created a reservoir along the river known as Lake Volta.[1]
