In recent times, new intriguing mounds have been discovered in Pawłosiów forest through the utilisation of LiDAR data sources. In order to investigate whether these structures are long barrows built by “beakers” communities, we have carried out preliminary geophysic research, geological drillings, and lithological analysis. As a result, we confirmed the anthropogenic origin of both structures. The main feature registered during the fieldwork was the lithological and stratigraphical difference between the mounds and their direct geological context. Moreover, a presence of an archaeological feature was identified within the frontal part of one of the mounds. These facts, together with key information regarding the location of both earthen structures in the field and their spatial relationship to the nearby FBC settlement at site 52 in Pawłosiów, suggest that they may be relics of the FBC long barrows. In this study, we also discussed these mounds in the context of their spatial-chronological position in the settlement network(s). It is plausible that the inhabitants of Pawłosiów 52 settlement were responsible for the construction of both long barrows in the period ca. 3650–3400 BC. Additionally, we do not exclude the possible alternative (non-funeral) functions and meanings of the cemetery.

Distribution of the anomalies, as visible on a map depicting obtained data, reflects numerous structures related to human activity in the area during the prehistory and historic times. Among them are two features interpreted as residues of funerary rituals taking place at the site. One of them pertains to Middle Neolithic earthen long barrow, whereas the second by its shape resembles Late Neolithic/Early Bronze Age tumuli. Apart from the latter, one can discern numerous anomalies potentially related to pits and ditches. Interpretation of the geophysical imagery was based upon the results of excavations conducted in 2010 in the nearby section of Skołoszów, site 7. In the process, funeral structures in the types of earthen long barrow and a presumable tumulus were recorded. Thus, it is possible to confront observations inferred from the results of non-invasive, magnetometric survey, with data obtained by means of more direct exploratory methods. Besides the prehistoric record, our investigation resulted in reconstruction of the trenches most probably dating to the First World War.

Investigation into the construction of dwellings, their spatial arrangements, and the nearest sur... more Investigation into the construction of dwellings, their spatial arrangements, and the nearest surroundings is highly relevant in studying the functioning of an archaeological phenomenon. During the recent years of excavation undertaken at the Gordineşti II-Stînca Goală site, we have revealed the remains of at least two dwellings and their economic surroundings that on the whole may be referred to as household clusters. In this paper, we would like to focus on one of them (House no. 1). Our main goal is to present not only the key attributes of the dwelling but also the results of the spatial analysis of features and artefacts found inside and outside of it. Based on those data, we can suggest that this dwelling consisted of two functionally varied rooms. This inference seems to be also relevant in the broader sense; it can expand the general knowledge related to issues relating to the household clusters usage in the Eastern Carpathian area at the end of the 4 th millennium BC.

Using one of the most popular of them, i.e. magnetometry, we carried out a survey of the area of the multi-phase Eneolithic site of Brînzeni IV (north-western Moldova) in 2019. As a result, the spatial arrangement of the site and its current state of preservation were preliminarily identified.

Such methods have contributed to recognition of a very intriguing trapezoidal-shaped structure at site 31 in Pustowo in Middle Pomerania. It was initially detected by LiDAR, and was further investigated by means of magnetometry prospection. The outcomes of this research may indicate that the examined structure can be interpreted as a non-megalithic long barrow of the Funnel Beaker culture.

These structures have been well recognized in Northern, Western and Central Europe. In a group of a few dozen dates, there are some that suggest, on the basis of the probability distribution, that representatives of communities of this culture might have been present on the area ca. 3900-3800 BC. However, such dating may be disputable. Attempts in recent years to confront such early dates with contextual ceramic materials have not provided satisfactory answers to this question. This paper is focused on an assessment of the potential of absolute chronology determinations and their analytic values. After eliminating all questionable dates, statistic simulations of the chronology of the local Funnel Beaker culture have been made. The results obtained suggest that this phenomenon might have been more short-lived than so far believed.

Among them, a large settlement in Skołoszów 16 seems to be particularly significant due to its internal characteristics. In order to determine its extent, spatial arrangement and chronology, an interdisciplinary investigation (including excavations and a noninvasive geophysical survey) was carried out in 2017–2018. As a consequence of two seasons of field work campaigns, we have recognized numerous morphologically diverse features (mainly pits) and the settlement (cultural) layer. Excavations documented the intense usage of the settlement’s space which encouraged carrying out a geophysical survey over the wider area of the site. The magnetic anomaly distribution reflects many presumable anthropogenic features. Several particular concentrations of features visible on the magnetometry image seem to be related with the FBC, thus delimiting the spatial extent of the site. Based on the geophysical picture, it was possible to estimate that the site measuredat least 65×40 m, while the excavations conducted revealed that the settlement was comprised of numerous pits and one settlement layer.

It deals with shaping of the settlement network of this cultural phenomenon in relation to the local natural environment, chronological issues (initiation, duration and deconstruction of the phenomenon) and intercultural contacts. Analysing the sources it was found that in the studied area, the communities of the Funnel Beaker culture formed characteristic settlement clusters, strongly related to the network of river valleys crossing the loess patch of the Rzeszów Foothills and the Lower San Valley. Within such clusters there were functionally diverse sites such as: cemeteries, various size of settlements and camps. In the light of the latest data in the field of absolute dating and information coming from ceramics, it can be assumed that the appearance of these communities in the discussed area occurred slightly earlier than about 3700 BC. Their development did not take place in isolation from neighbouring “worlds”. In many local settlements of the Funnel Beaker culture the ceramics were recorded, which may provide evidence of contacts with the eastern environment of this culture and the late Tripolye culture.

Within the course of the twentieth century, these necropolises were recorded in the areas of Sandomierz, Lublin and Western Małopolska lands. In recent years, they have also been identified in the Rzeszów Foothills. Due to field and cabinet works, carried out by various scientific centres for many years, it was possible to gather a lot of information about this phenomenon in this Trichterbecherkomplex zone. It relates mainly to the morphology of tombs and graves and their spatial relationships. Relatively much is known about the age and sex structure of individuals buried there and accompanying artefacts. A novelty in recent times is a significant increase in data in terms of radiocarbon dates. They are some of the most crucial and desired sorts of information, explaining the time of functioning of such necropolises. This fact is particularly intriguing as for e.g. the attempt to determine time relations with over similar forms present in the Kuyavian-Pomeranian zone and the places of local settlement systems.

In terms of technology and stylistics in the case of pottery from the Brînzeni type sites and stylistics in the case of pottery from the Gordinești type sites, we can see some analogies in the cultural environment of the central European area. For the Brînzeni group the clearest analogies tend to be seen in eastern, southern and south-eastern areas of the Funnel Beaker culture, whereas for the Gordinești group this seems to be visible within the Złota culture in the Sandomierz Upland, Middle Vistula region. Another issue of our study concerns the chronological frames of these two groups. Analyses of the radiocarbon data series obtained so far allow us to make some careful corrections in the chronological scheme of the Late Eneolithic for eastern Europe. Both mentioned issues fit into socio-cultural relations in the East Carpathian area in the context of the cultural transformations in the second half of the 4th millennium BC.

Based on very intriguing discoveries (i.e. remains of a dwelling, part of a clay platform and one pit) during the excavations carried out in 2016 and earlier, it was decided to investigate a larger area using non-invasive geophysical method. As a result, a few types of anomalies of different shapes were identified. It seems that these anomalies indicate the occurrence of remains of the dwellings as well as hypothetical main square between them in the centre of this fortified settlement.
