This is a picture of an ancient Chinese irrigation system. The way it worked was that  two people stepped down on wooden pedals that spun the cogwheel that was attached to a chain which had a wooden pallets on it which pulled the water out of the irrigation ditch and pulled the water in to water channels which is water from rivers that go separate ways The water channels keep the rice submerged in water.
