The sound of silence

7 Small Shawls: T - 157 days and counting down.

The kids are in bed and it's quiet quiet quiet. Aaaaaaaaaah. :)

Today I got the edging completely swatched on shawl number 3 for my 7 Small Shawls project, and I'm starting to think it's time to name her.
I know what I have in mind.
But what do you think she should be called?
Leave your choice in a comment by Monday, August 2, midnight PST, and be entered to win a shawl pin like the one pictured here!
Remember, it will have to be the name of one of the seven sisters (Pleiades)!

Onward.

I sometimes think about how I am really not making an important contribution to the world, like an AIDS researcher might be, or a teacher, or firefighter. Today was one of those days. But then something happened. Someone wrote me about being touched by my blog in a very personal way, and I reminded myself again of something Yarnhog once left in a comment: "bloom where you are planted." Make your little corner of the world a better place. I'm feeling pretty good right now. Thank you for sharing. :)

Looks like Electra to me . . . before I knew the name had to be a sister, I was thinking Iridium, like an iridescent iris . . . but Electra sounds perfect!

You create beauty, raise your own children and inspire others. BIG contributions!

I vote for Alcyone, too, wife of Poseidon, the sea god. Fits her color!

One of the meanings of (A)Sterope is "twinkling". The beads certainly twinkle.

Given the lightening-like angles and the beautiful blue tones of the yarn, I'd agree with Elektra!

I choose Alcyone's birds because the color remember to me the ocean and the stitches are, well, I think they are like littles birds giving Alcyone your songs, a lot of littles birds flying around her.

I wish your inspiration be always so brilliant. You improve this inspiration day by day.

So true! There are not many of us who can make massive changes to the world, but if everybody made their own corner a happy place imagine the kind of world we'd have!

My vote is for Electra. I just love the name :-)

Alcyone? Sounds a little bit like a sea weed to me... I am almost finshed my Maia. It is GOOD! Not as nearly as difficult as you might think when you first see it.

I vote for Electra. The yarn, the beads...she looks electric to me. The name applies as a sentiment to the times when you created late at night, hence needing electricity...now that you are going to bed early right?
Ok, maybe that's stretching it, but I really like the name.

I'm glad you got some quiet. And I think that everyone has moments where they question their contribution....but you have brought children into this world and you are doing your best to raise them right, so even without your contributions to the knitting world.l...you're doing plenty.

As for names....not Electra because Electra means "amber," "shining," and "bright."

How about Alcyone?

She has ALWAYS been Electra to me.

"Electra means "amber," "shining," and "bright." (though the amber part doesn't work)

You are making so much more than a little corner of the world a better place in many many ways.

Have a great weekend!

I'm going to vote for Asterope because the beads remind me of the heat lightning we get in the sky here. Little drops of twinkling jewels in the dark blue night.

I'm thinking Sterope, also called Asterope. Asterope means star-faced, and I see the stars in the edging and in the twinkling of the beads.

I vote for Alcyone - a blue-white star.

Your words and your art move me in a way medical research never has ;-). The world would indeed be a gloomier place without the beauty of the way lace speaks to you. It doesn't speak to just everyone that way. Have you stopped to think there may be AIDS researchers who think better after working a row or two of one of your patterns? Believe me, you're contributing. Thanks for sharing.

I vote for Electra, too.

I vote for Asterope, since "Aster" is ancient Greek for "star." Most of the other sisters seem to be more closely associated with water and/or Poseidon in some way, so I think Asterope is the most appropriate for a star-themed shawl!

I think Electra is the best of the remaining 5 sisters...my first thought was Maia, but I see that is already taken by Shawl #2. The description using violet as well as blue pulls me to this name.

Although seemingly counterintuitive, I pick ELECTRA, after researching;
here is why---
Myth: Zeus fathered her son, Dardanus, founder of Troy. This star is clearly visible to the naked eye; yet Electra is the missing Pleiad who withdrew her light in sorrow at the destruction of Llium, the house of Dardanus. Electra, they say, left her sisters and took a place in the Arctic circle. That is why they sing:
...In Troy's last hour...
Electra shrouded her form in mist and cloud, and left the Pleiad-band...
Still rises up...their bright troop in the skies; but she alone hides viewless ever since the town of her son Dardanus in ruin fell...
--from p.406 of Star Names, Richard Hinckley Allen, 1889.

". . . The lost Pleiad seen no more below." — Byron's Beppo.
Fl. 17 Taurus, or b, 4.6. Electra, although for at least two or three centuries the title of a clearly visible star, has been regarded as the Lost Pleiad (another Pleiad Merope is often considered The Lost Pleiad), from the legend that she withdrew her light in sorrow at witnessing the destruction of Ilium, which was founded by her son Dardanos,— as witness Ovid (43 B.C.-18?A.D.) in the Fasti:

Electra Trojae spectare ruinas
Non tulit ante oculos, opposuitque manum;

Or, as Hyginus wrote, left her place to be present at its fall, thence wandering off as a hair-star, or comet; or, reduced in brilliancy, settled down close to Mizar (in Ursa Major) as Alopex, the Fox, the Arabs' Al Suha, and our Alcor (in Ursa Major).

The Pirt-Kopan-noot tribe of Australia have a legend of a Lost Pleiad, making this the queen of the other six, beloved by their heavenly Crow, our Canopus, and who, carried away by him, never returned to her home.

"Thy beauty shrouded by the heavy veil Thy wedlock won." — Elizabeth Worthington Fiske.

I'm partial to Electra.

I also struggle with the same fears of not "doing enough" and have to remind myself it's impossible to be all things to all people, impossible to single-handedly save the world. But I've seen in so many ways the way making a difference in even ONE life can have an amazing ripple effect, reaching far beyond what we could ever dream.
