MECHANISMS OF EXCITATORY POSTSYNAPTIC POTENTIALS AND INHIBITORY POSTSYNAPTIC POTENTIALS A. Postsynaptic neuron at which several presynaptic afferent fibers terminate. Fibers colored in pink convey excitatory information across the synaptic cleft to the postsynaptic neuron, whereas the inhibitory fiber is blue and conveys inhibitory information to the postsynaptic neuron. B. Excitatory fiber. At the excitatory synaptic cleft, glutamate is released. Glutamate passes across the and acts as an…

The main difference between excitatory and inhibitory neurons is that the excitatory neurons release neurotransmitters that fire an action potential in the postsynaptic neuron whereas the inhibitory neurons release neurotransmitters that inhibit the firing of an action potential.

Myasthenia Gravis (MG)

✅ Overview

Myasthenia gravis (MG) is an autoimmune disorder characterized by muscle weakness and fatigue. The main pathology of the disease lies in the neuromuscular junction (NMJ), where there is a deficiency of the neurotransmitter acetylcholine. This leads to an imbalance between the excitatory neurotransmitter acetylcholine and the inhibitory neurotransmitter GABA, resulting in muscle weakness.

✅ Examination

Try to elicit fatiguability in the skeletal musculature:
*Have patient repeatedly blink to see ‘ptosis’
*Have them look upward for long period of time & move eye side to side to see ‘diplopi Muscle Weakness And Fatigue, Neuromuscular Junction, Muscle Weakness, Autoimmune Disorder, Medical Education, Neurology, Skeletal, Neuroscience, Disease
