Same hair, revolution,
Same build, evolution...

Notes: “Westerberg and company did get a bit loose and creative. Responding to a request, they played part of “Election Day” for the first time on the tour. And the most fascinating oddity of the night was their attempt to play the songs “Androgynous” and “Seen Your Video” at the exact same time. Certainly not a perfect moment, but it was an ingenious bit of punk spontaneity.” - Philadelphia City Paper

Notes: “The Replacements’s first in San Francisco since January 1991. I was lucky enough to have seen them a few times back in the day, and this show was exactly what I hoped for--everything from over-the-top powerful to vintage ‘Mats sloppiness. The antics included Paul singing “Androgynous” from inside a tent, switching instruments on “Seen Your Video”, and a brief attempt at “I Hate Music.”  - HuskerDu1972

The phony rock ‘n’ roll,
We don’t wanna know...

Notes: From Tapeboy of JEMS:
A great set by The Replacements on the first night of their “Back By Unpopular Demand” tour at a theater they last played in June of 1991 (which we also taped). The Mats played the first minute and 40 seconds of the show behind a curtain, which they raised as the vocals began for “Seen Your Video.” This setlist was much heavier on deep cuts than the festival appearances they’ve made over the last two years and at least a couple of songs appeared to be in response to requests from the audience.

“When I saw the Replacements at the Roxy in Los Angeles (12-17-85), I had seen (and taped) them twice in New York - once was so drunkenly bad it was great (CBGB), and one was really pretty great (Irving Plaza), so I must admit that I was a bit scared when we saw Paul walking over to Dan Turner’s liquor store near the Roxy and then walking past all of us standing in line with what looked like a bottle of Jack Daniels in a paper bag - well, thankfully the ‘Mats must have all balanced their “inebriants” appropriately, because they came out blasting on all cylinders - once again I was kind of far over on the right side with the mic taped to the wall...” - Tapegeek

Notes: “This was the last time I saw (and recorded) the ‘Mats with Bob Stinson in the band - hardly surprising since Westerberg is abusing him a good bit throughout the show - the band stays tight for about 5 songs and then goes south... with some gems buried in there - I just remember being really kinda bummed out by this show... I had seen the ‘Mats at their best and at their total worst, and this was somewhere in between, but neither - I am sure that I am probably being too hard on this show but who knows - I recorded a lot more centrally, I believe, than the 12-17-85 show, with the mic taped to a wall...” - Tapegeek

Notes: “Of all our rock band reunion fantasies, the ‘Mats were high on the list. JEMS has a long, rich history with Westerberg & Co., having taped them many times from the ‘80s through Paul’s solo career. So it was with great glee that we entered Memorial Stadium to see our friends Paul and Tommy again. And the show didn’t disappoint.

Sometimes when bands reunite much later in life, they can’t quite get “that sound” again, and in the case of the ‘Mats, how would they ever recreate the ramshackle vibe that had been fueled by youth and alcohol? But to our ears, the 2014 ‘Mats still sound like the ‘Mats should, and while adulthood has arrived, there’s still something delightfully off-kilter in that oh-so-attractive way about each performance.” - BK, JEMS

God what a mess,
On the ladder of success...

Notes: “Without much warning, Westerberg jumped into the photo pit and began playing “Left of the Dial” with his back to the audience, before turning around for the final verse, locking eyes with the diehards on the barrier as they sang the closing lines of “And if I don’t see ya, in a long, long while/I’ll try to find you/Left of the dial” together in ragged unison. It was an unplanned, highly unorthodox, and highly affective move on Westerberg’s part, but at the end of the day, that’s what the Replacements were all about.”  - KEXP, Seattle
