Hello Crafty Friends!
Today, we are going to make a handmade winter card with a cute snowman design and the text Let it snow. But before we start, let’s talk about the main attraction of this project – the “Let it Snow” stamp from D.R.S. Designs.
This snowman design was initially used as a digital stamp for a previous design team project, but it is now available for purchase as a rubber stamp. As a digital stamp, it is easy to adjust the size of the design, which is not possible with a rubber stamp. However, you can use a similar digital stamp to create this design, or you can buy the rubber stamp and make it on a smaller card.
So, without further ado, let’s begin the tutorial and create some winter magic!
Gathering your Supplies
Before we begin with this project, let’s gather our craft supplies. Here’s a list of things you will need to make your own handmade snowman winter card::
- Vertical Let It Snow Stamp: You can use either a digital stamp or a rubber stamp, just make sure you have it ready. You don’t have to use this specific stamp; you can use something similar to make a beautiful card.
- Paper: Choose a sturdy cardstock for your card base and background panels. You can opt for white or coloured cardstock, depending on your preference. For this card, I used white card stock.
- Colouring Medium: Select your favourite colouring medium to bring your snowman to life. I used alcohol markers for vibrant colours, but you can use any colouring medium you prefer.
- Glitter Glue (Optional): Add some sparkle to your card by adding glitter glue embellishments. This step is optional but adds a festive touch to your winter scene.
- Adhesive: Ensure you have a strong adhesive on hand to assemble your card layers. Double-sided tape or glue works well for securing paper elements.
- Scissors or Paper Trimmer: Use scissors or a paper trimmer to cut your cardstock to size and trim any excess paper.
- 3D drops (optional): Use 3D drops as embellishments.
Now that we have all the necessary materials and understand the versatility of our stamps, we can proceed to the next step in creating our Handmade Snowman Winter Card!
Crafting the Handmade Snowman Winter Card: A Step-by-Step Guide
Now that we have all the necessary supplies, we can begin making our handmade snowman winter card. In this section, I will guide you through the entire process step by step, from stamping the design to colouring the snowman and assembling the card. Let’s begin!
Step 1: Preparing the Stamp and Coloring
Before we start colouring the vertical snowman, let’s prepare the stamp for the card. As previously mentioned, I received the snowman design as a digital stamp, which allowed me to resize it to fit the card perfectly. If you’re using a rubber stamp, don’t worry! The same colouring techniques can be applied even if the stamp is narrower.
If you’re using a rubber stamp, you can skip the preparation step
If you’re using a digital stamp, adjust the size to the one you want to use. The height of my stamp is approximately 18 centimetres. The width of a digital stamp is automatically adjusted when you change the height. This way, the proportions remain correct. You can easily adjust this in Microsoft Word.
With the stamp prepared and ready to go, let’s move on to the next step: colouring the snowman.
Step 2: Colouring the Snowman
Now that our stamp is ready, it’s time to add some colour to our snowman! I used alcohol markers for this project, but feel free to use any colouring medium you prefer.
Here are the colour combinations I used for colouring the digital stamp:
- Snowman: Cool Grey 1 (CG1), Cool Grey 4 (CG4), Cool Grey 1 (CG1).
- Letters: Teal Blue (184), Cool Mint (181), Cool Shadow (178).
- Hat and Scarf: Dark Indigo (188), Dark Sky (191), Midi Sky (190), Sky Blue (76).
- Nose: French Vermillion (22), Orange (23), Yellow (34).
- Snowflakes: Cool Shadow (178).
With the colouring underway, our snowman is starting to come to life on paper! Let’s continue with the next steps to complete our handmade snowman winter card.
Step 3: Creating the Card Base
Now that our snowman is beautifully coloured, it’s time to create the base for our handmade card. The dimensions of the card base may vary depending on the size of the stamp you use. For this project, I opted for a slimline card, which provides plenty of room to showcase the vertical snowman design.
To create the slimline card base, follow these steps:
- Choose Your Cardstock: SStart by selecting sturdy cardstock in the colour of your choice. I recommend using white cardstock to make the snowman design stand out.
- Cut Your Cardstock: Using a paper trimmer or scissors cut your cardstock to the desired size for a slimline card. The standard size for a slimline card is 10.5 centimetres by 21 centimetres. However, you can adjust the dimensions based on your preference and the size of your stamp. If you make a card base yourself, you need paper measuring 21 centimetres by 21 centimetres.
- Score and Fold: once your cardstock is cut to size, score it at the halfway point at 10.5 centimetres. This will create a clean fold for your card. Then, carefully fold the card along the scored line to create the base of your slimline card.
By following these steps, you’ll have a sturdy and professional-looking base for your handmade snowman winter card. Now, let’s move on to the next step to create the different layers for our card.
Step 4: Creating the Different Layers of the Card
Now that we have prepared our card base, it’s time to create the different layers for our handmade snowman winter card. This step involves assembling the different elements of the card to bring our design to life.
Here’s how you can create the different layers of the card:
- Background Panel: Choose a background panel that can serve as the backdrop for your snowman design. To keep things simple, cut a white paper to the size of 10.5 centimetres by 21 centimetres, exactly the size of our card. If you prefer some coloured edge, use an alcohol marker to colour the edge of the panel. I recommend using the colour Dark Indigo. You can also use coloured paper or patterned paper for the background, especially if you have more visibility of the background. Stick this panel to the base of the card.
- Stamped Panel: Take the stamped and coloured image of the snowman that we prepared earlier. Use a slimline die to cut out this panel. Make sure the snowman falls in the center of the panel and then run it through your die-cutting machine. This slimline die will leave a stitched edge and a wavy edge. Stick the stamped panel to the background panel with glue or foam tape.
Now that this step is done, we can move on to the final finishing touches.
Step 5: The Final Touches
We’re almost done with our handmade snowman winter card! Before we finish, let’s add some final touches to make it sparkle and shine.
- Glitter Glue: For a touch of winter magic, consider adding glitter glue to certain elements of your card. Use a small brush to apply the glitter glue to the ice flowers. This way, the ice flowers will have a nice glittering effect. Remember to let the glitter glue dry completely before handling the card further.
- 3D Drops: To add dimension and interest to your card, you can use 3D drops as embellishments. Apply small dots of 3D drops to areas of the card where you want to create texture or emphasize certain details. I recommend applying the clear glitter 3D drops to the heavy dots of the stamp. Allow the 3D drops to dry completely before assembling the card.
With the glitter glue and 3D drops applied, our handmade snowman winter card is complete! Take a moment to admire your beautiful creation and enjoy the satisfaction of knowing that you have created something very special. Your card is now ready to spread joy and warmth to the lucky recipient. Well done!
