Pretty Things Spotlight: * Tascha *

Update: The winner of Tascha's sweet little "Tea Party" giclee print is SANEH! Congratulations! Thanks to all of you who entered. Be sure to enter this week's give-a-way.

◦ ○◦○ ◦

Tascha is a well-known Canadian Folk artist, known for her whimsical and colourful painting style, which depicts sweet images of people and their faithful companions.

I hadn't heard of Tascha until recently, when she was sent to me through Fate. I found her wunderful work when I started my search for an artist who could perfectly capture the essence and personality of my dear, recently departed kitty, Kiko. Upon seeing Tascha's work and subject matter, I just knew she was the very one who could perfectly portray Kiko.

You can tell that Tascha's heart and joy goes into her work as much of her paintings depicts rosy-cheeked girls or images of Frida Kahlo enjoying a tea party with friends, swimming with the Mermaids or having a lazy day nap with their furry friends. Her work is delightful, whimsical and fun.

I just know that her work will touch your heart too!

"I'd love to travel to the moon and float around among the stars. I have flying dreams all the time and it would be awesome to actually do it!"

Spotlight: Tascha

Tell us a bit about You…
Hi! My name is Tascha and I live in the hustle and bustle of downtown Toronto, Ontario Canada. I moved here to attend art school (Ontario College of Art and Design) and loved it so much that I stayed after I graduated. I make little paintings and prints here in my studio with my 2 Siamese cats by my side.

What inspires you?
I get a lot of inspiration from my cats, Lily and Opie. They are su
ch a strong part of my life that I feel the need to often incorporate cats into my paintings. I love storybooks and happy magical lands where there are no worries. I like to create a little world where everything is good.

Apart from creating things, what do you do for fun?
Creating
things takes most of my time. I love to experiment with new techniques and art supplies. Other than art I enjoy bike riding, cooking, collecting exotic beads and drinking tea with friends.

What has been your most memorable moment selling your art?
My most memorable moment was when I was asked to do a commission of a very la
rge 4 by 5 foot canvas painting. I had painted only tiny canvases at this point and it was quite challenging. So much more physical than small paintings. You really have to use a lot more of your arm muscles. I remember carrying this giant painting to UPS to be packed up and shipped. I felt so proud,...like I had arrived.

Any advice for fellow artists...
Everyone has a story to tell in their art. Like Mr. Rogers says "There is only one person in the world like you." You are special. As an artist, you bring something unique to the world, so, as long as you are true to yourself, your art will shine. Don't be overly concerned with what other artists are doing...run your own race.

This is a silly question, but one I feel tells a lot about you...If you could be any character, who would it be and Why?
I'd be Wilma Flintstone. She's a good friend, can cook a mean brontosaurus dinner and has cute feet.

Where would you like to travel and Why?
I'd love to travel to the moon and float among the stars. I have flying dreams all the time and it would be awesome to actually do it.

Tell us your future plans for your business...
I have been selling my art on the internet since 2001. I have learned to go with the flow and try new opportunities as they come along. Everything is still so new on the internet as far as arts and crafts go. I'm enjoying the ride and love trying new venues. I also plan on getting into more galleries here in Toronto as I do miss the social aspect of art. You can also expect larger paintings and some art dolls in the future.

More about You…
I want people on the Internet to get to know me better. Making videos is the best way I can do th
is, so come and visit me at my You Tube channel where I let you into my creative processes. You can find me at:

Lovely interview of one of my favourite artists!! My favourite? difficult to pick one, but I'll go with ''3 Faces of Frida''!!! Bright and beautiful colours.

Am sorry I had to delete my last post as I made that from another email id (not connected to my blog).

Wonderful interview with Tasha, she’s as sweet as her art! A truly difficult task picking a favorite! So many speak to me! I love them all, with five favorites. Sleepy Bunny time with all the chubbiness cuddly love, plus Midnight cat, the way she is sprawled on that adorable purple lounge are top on my list. Anything with dogs, as I adore the little rascals! But I will pick Little Lizzy and Bunny have desert, the whole scenario is whimsical, humorous and cute!

I love them all!! My favorite is Magical Cupcake Fairy!

Tascha is one of my new favorite artists... I do lover her cupcake fairy. I love the softness of her shoulders and her wings. When I say softness, I mean as as a nice word for plus size... since I am one of those... she make her look beautiful and proud to be soft. Thanks for a great interview and fun opportunity to win a great artist's work. ([email protected])

I found Tascha very early in her on-line career on Ebay. I had lost my two dear feline friends of nearly 20 years and the little stories she tells in each of her paintings reminded me of Fable and Chukchi. It was easy to see that she was a keen observer of cat behaviour. I've often thought that she should try picture books. Her style seems perfect for that venue.

My favourite print is "Bike Ride to the Vet."

I love Tascha's artwork! And as for the contest . . . choose? You want me to choose a favourite? That's like asking me which breeze is the most refreshing, or what baby is the most delightful, or which kitten is cutest, or puppy is best?

I can't do it. And I won'! But I will visit Tascha's shop to enjoy every single image there!

I guess I am not alone in thinking the Magical Cupcake Fairy print is tops!

My 5 yr old DD would love TeaParty to hang in her bedroom...she's a little bare when it comes to original art that is not created with Crayola or fingerpaint!

Flying Free Angel is adorable. Thanks for the chance.

I have two favorites! The first is Magical Cupcake, for a girl who's always dieting you look forward to that one day of the week when you can eat anything. For me it is a cupcake and it tastes so good that it seems magical. My second fav is the Tea Party. It reminds me of Sundays when my best friend and I have tea on my balcony and my cat Kip always makes an appearance. But all of Tascha's art is amazing and it makes you feel like a kid again. I Love It!!! <3

I love Tascha's art! I honestly couldn't choose a single painting or print, it's impossible!!!

I love her Fridas - she has one painting where she works her own style on one of Frida's self portraits, after that it has to be her recent 'Frida: Keeper of the Birds' that she has literally just sold (I would have loved to have bought it!), as far as I know she hasn't offered this as a print yet.

I think Tascha might have some tendencies towards - what I call - magical thinking! Have you noticed how many times she uses a configuration of three in her paintings?

Three really is a magical number for so many reasons - and it doesn't matter if you are coming from a scientific, religious or creative background - it holds a special place in the universe.

I don't know if Tascha deliberately structures her paintings in that way - but it is something that I am drawn to: Three Faces Of Frida; Three Black Cats Portrait; Three Black Cats on a Sofa; Hey That's Our Nest; Bunny Basket & back to my favourite: Frida: Keeper of the Birds.

Her use of black cats is also interesting - depending on your location they can be good or bad luck. Here in Ireland they are generally seen as good luck... unless they happen to cross your path! Add to that the fact there are three cats... it's almost like double luck.

You really just wanted a short answer didn't you?! Here we go then:

From the prints she currently has in stock it would have to be...

3 Black Cats Portrait. Why? Numbers, magic, my kitties, me and an awesome painting!

but...but....but....

Frida's bird's nest hair-do is just an amazing painting, I can't even describe why I love it so much! It's Tascha, It's Frida, it's bright & vivid... what can I say!!!

Hello! I really enjoyed your Pretty Things Spotlight on Tascha. It is always nice to learn a little bit about the artist behind the artwork, what inspires them and how they first began. Tascha is truly a talented artist. It was fun visiting her Etsy Shop and seeing all her different works of art. One of my favorites is the SIAMESE Cat goes to market PRINT 7x5 by TASCHA. There was something about it that I was immediately drawn to, perhaps because my grandmother when she was alive had a Siamese cat that looked similar to the one Tascha painted. Thank you for offering this wonderful givwaway!
