Maartje A.B.
In my dissertation project "Mirror of mutual relations: communication between Hanseatic cities" I study the development of urban networks in the so-called Cologne region around the rivers Rhine, Meuse, Waal and IJssel, and their relation to Hanse between ca. 1450 and 1650. I focus on the urban communication network, which pre-eminently mirrors mutual relations.

Between August 2017 and September 2018, I have been working at Radboud University in the project 'Historical Database Suriname'. This project is coordinated by Coen van Galen of Radboud University Nijmegen and Maurits Hassankhan of Anton de Kom University Paramaribo.
I supported volunteers on the online platform velehanden.nl, and structured and standardized the database resulting from their work.
In August 2017, I graduated from the Research Master at Radboud University. I completed the History programme.

Tijdens deze lezing voor historische vereniging Numaga wordt een indruk gegeven van de betekenis van de Hanze voor de stad Nijmegen en zijn inwoners gedurende de veertiende tot en met de zestiende eeuw. Conference Presentations by Maartje A.B.
Not only within Guelders was urban cooperation sought after. At a supra-regional level, the Hanse functioned as a way to join forces. Especially in the early fifteenth century, cities in the area of the present-day eastern Netherlands and western Germany asked for formal acknowledgement as a Hanse city (Henn 2016). This trend has been discussed as part of the formalization of the structure of the network of Hanse cities and businessmen in the fifteenth century (Weststrate 2008, 2003; Henn 2016).
This paper will discuss the position of Gueldern cities in the formalizing structure of the Hanse network. Special attention will be given to the balancing act of seeking urban cooperation within the Hanse, among other things to counterbalance rulers such as the duke of Guelders, while competing with each other at the same time, and seeking for support of rulers from time to time.
