Oh Scrap! : Somebody Stop Me

I love Oh Scrap! Sundays...

But with all the inspiration that is linked up each week, I find myself fighting the urge to start a new project or try a new block.




Recently I saw some cute strawberry blocks that Cathy over at Sane, Crazy and Crumby Quilting started making for an older UFO she has.  Their cuteness has been bouncing around my brain and in order to justify starting a new quilt, I thought "Wouldn't it be fun to make a garden themed Rainbow Scrap Challenge quilt".  So while my red scraps were on my cutting table, I whipped up my own 12" version.  My plan is to make garden themed blocks in each RSC color.  They will be different sizes and maybe technique - who knows where it will lead!

Happy Pinwheels

I have been working on this little finish for about a month now.  It started out as a bag of bonus triangles from a friend.  I don't usually mess with cuttings this small but when they are all together in a bag, they are a bit hard to resist.



Once I looked at what was in the bag, I saw there were multiples of the same prints and I could easily turn them into some pinwheel blocks. Little 4" pinwheels are so darn cute!



Once I had all the pinwheels made, I knew there were not enough to make a very big quilt so I pulled some orange and turquoise solid chunks from my scraps and framed them up to bring the block size to 6".



You can see I used the different colors to create a pattern to the squares.  I also used the mismatched HSTs and made five miscellaneous blocks.  I put one in the center and one on each corner.  A couple of borders and Ta-Da....a cute little scrappy baby quilt.

And all I had left over was a green pinwheel and a couple of triangles.  Otherwise, I used every last bit in that bag!




I only had a yard of this orange oval fabric so I added in a little inset so it would pin to my quilt frame.  I quilted it with some quick swirls.



So another finish from the stash and the scrap bin.  I have been enjoying making these little quilts.  They go together so quickly!




Quilt Backing
Also, I just placed an order with Connecting Threads because they have all of their wide backings on sale.  I love to have backing pieces on hand in my stash.  (Connecting Threads is where I bought the oval fabrics on this little quilt.)  And getting them at a great price really makes me happy!

A Little Bit Softer

Have you had a chance to check out Linda's blog over at kokaquilts?  She has such a wonderful scrappy Bohemian style.  Her fabric stash is very different than mine so I am always intrigued by the quilts she makes.

Recently she started on a project that plays with fabric values.  Her lovely blocks have been stuck in my head and I have been thinking it was something I wanted to try.

In the gifted scraps I received recently, there are a ton of precut squares.  There are both solids and prints and in looking at the fabric, I would guess they come from three different projects.
I began thinking that maybe I could use those squares to make some blocks of my own.



I started marking and trimming a whole bunch of HSTs so I could start playing.  My prints are a softer volume than Linda's and I find myself wavering between calling this one an interesting success or a big fail.



I guess I am not ready to give up on them yet because I keep making blocks.  This nighttime photo shows I finished up at seven blocks last night and I think there are another handful just waiting to be sewn.  I am totally intrigued by the shadowy impression the design has.  I could bump up the value of the prints but then I think they might just become a "regular old" scrappy quilt block.  
I was wanting something that made someone go "Hmmm..."

I will probably figure it out once I have enough blocks for a whole quilt top.
Right now I am just enjoying the process!

Oh Scrap! : Flags

My scrap quilting has been all over the place this month.  I have worked on RSC blocks, created quilts from a gifted scrap bag and have been testing out a few blocks that I might want to make into quilts.  The latter has been with limited success.  

I will share those thoughts later as they gel a bit more...




But I did get a dozen #flagsforsue blocks finished and sent off to Alycia for a Quilts of Valor project she is hosting.  If you want to read more about, you can check it out here.

Paper Piece Leftovers

 If you have ever made a paper-pieced quilt, then you know you can be left with a bunch of odd shaped scraps.  In the last bag of scraps I received from a friend, there were oodles of them for me to play with!



Here is a photo of the quilt she made. lots of bright colors set in all different shades of gray.



The scraps I received all looked very similar to the triangles above.  They were all different shapes and in both solids and prints (not shown).


I paired up a print triangle with a solid one and trimmed them down to a QSR (quarter square rectangle) using my bloc-loc QSR ruler.  My QSR ruler is small so it took a lot of sliding, turning, and a few other rulers to  get them trimmed up uniformly.



I sewed up as many as I could from the scraps I had.  I was able to sew up enough to make this cute little baby quilt.



I really did not have enough QSRs to make a decent size quilt so I added some solid gray rectangles in varying shades of gray.  I also added the two side borders in a light gray to bring the width of the quilt to about 36".



The quilting in both the blocks and the borders were just some simple loop configurations.  I wasn't in the mood to do any stitch in the ditch so all the vertical seams got a loopy quilting too.



I was a little concerned I wouldn't have anything for the backing in my stash but I found this wonderful stripe that worked perfectly.
