Fernanda Baião is a Senior Researcher in the areas of Conceptual Modeling, Ontologies, Data Science (Distributed Data Integration) and Business Process Management, with over 150 scientific publications.

From 2004 to 2018 she was a Professor af the Federal University of the State of Rio de Janeiro, where she led a research group on Ontology Matching, and applying Cognitive Sciences and Natural Language Processing to Process Mining. From 2001 to 2004 she was a post-doc at COPPE/UFRJ, from where she obtained her D.Sc (2001) and her M.Sc (1997). During 2000 she visited the University of Wisconsin-Madison (USA). Her D.Sc Thesis proposed a pioneer solution for Designing Distributed Databases by integrating Optimization Meta-heuristics and Theory Revision techniques from the AI field, and was the 3rd-best national PhD thesis of that year on Computer Science.

Fernanda also developed a valuable expertise in transfering results from Academia to Industry. Particularly, she prospected and acted as a Technical Leader in R&D projects on BPM, Enterprise Architecture, Information Security and Data Mining in the areas of Oil & Gas Exploration and Production, Insurance Management and IT Service Management.

Despite its importance, it continues to be a costly and complex activity. Within this task, information gathering is one of the most important phases, able to compromise the entire process in case of failure. This study consisted of a bibliographic review about the recent advances about this topic at the areas of Process Elicitation, Knowledge Elicitation and Software Requirements Elicitation, in order to propose guidelines for a possible solution for the stated problem. The proposal will be applied on a real scenario, on a large brazilian oil and gas company.

ABSTRACT Knowledge Management aims to promote the growth, communication and preservation of knowl... more ABSTRACT Knowledge Management aims to promote the growth, communication and preservation of knowledge within an organization, which includes managing the appropriate resources to facilitate knowledge sharing and reuse. Business Process-Oriented Knowledge Management focuses on discovering and representing the dynamic conversion of existing knowledge among participants involved in executing business processes. In this context, Knowledge-Intensive Processes are a very important and challenging specific subclass of processes, since they strongly involve socialization and informal exchanges of knowledge among participants. This paper describes in detail a method for semi-automatic discovery of relevant information characterizing Knowledge-Intensive Processes, as well as the results of further evaluation of the method. Our approach draws on the informal exchange of existing knowledge in collaborative tools such as e-mails. The output is a conceptual map that describes the main elements of a Knowledge-Intensive Process, as well as their relationships. The results from the case study conducted to evaluate the method in an organization underlined the prospects for using collaborative environments to discover the way agents perform their activities.

Ontology management is at the kernel of this evolution, and there is a lack of adequate strategies and mechanisms for handling it in such a way to contribute to a better alignment between business and IT. This work proposes an approach for enterprise ontology management as part of an Information Architecture initiative. This approach provides a more complete foundation of the ontology lifecycle while guiding the enterprise in this management, by defining a set of processes, roles and competencies required for ontology management. It was applied to a big enterprise in Brazil at the Data Integration department.

The Common Ontology of Value and Risk

Risk analysis is traditionally accepted as a complex and critical activity in various contexts, s... more Risk analysis is traditionally accepted as a complex and critical activity in various contexts, such as strategic planning and software development. Given its complexity, several modeling approaches have been proposed to help analysts in representing and analyzing risks. Naturally , having a clear understanding of the nature of risk is fundamental for such an activity. Yet, risk is still a heavily overloaded and conceptually unclear notion, despite the wide number of efforts to properly characterize it, including a series of international standards. In this paper, we address this issue by means of an in-depth ontological analysis of the notion of risk. In particular, this analysis shows a surprising and important result, namely, that the notion of risk is irreducibly intertwined with the notion of value and, more specifically, that risk assessment is a particular case of value ascription. As a result, we propose a concrete artifact, namely, the Common Ontology of Value and Risk, which we employ to harmonize different conceptions of risk existing in the literature.
