Abstract. For a long time there have been discussions in Education about the
disconnection between the work of the teacher in the classroom and the results of
research. The use of the word research in modem society warrants a reflection on
the concept of research itself. Many undergraduate courses and, practically, every
graduate course, have as a requirement a course on Research Methodology,

sometimes with different names. Even the most progressive elementary schools
engage students, before they leam how to read and write, in individual or group
research projects. It is common in research to control variables, creating control and
experimental groups. The results are, apparently, of little use for teachers in the
classroom. The sometimes esoteric language used in experiments, the rigid
subordination to a certain theoretical framework, and the lack of immediate practical
applications to the classroom, limit the usefulness and influence of research results
to the academic world. The media overwhelms the general populations with
references to research results. It is then natural to ask “After all, what is research?”
In this paper we will try to relate research to classroom action and describe the
potential of establishing useful connections between the world of practice and the
world of research.
Key words: Education. Mathematics education. Research. Classroom. Action.
