Belal H. Sababha, Ph.D. is an Associate Professor of Electrical and Computer Engineering at the King Abdullah II School of Engineering, Princess Sumaya University for Technology, Amman, Jordan. Currently spending a leave at HCT, UAE. While in Academia, Dr. Sababha has published more than 35 peer reviewed scientific publications. He is a US patent holder and IEEE Conference Chair. He is a member of various accreditation advisory boards, international conference scientific committees, technical program committees and organization committees. He is a reviewer for several high impact journals. Prior moving to academia, Dr. Sababha has worked in the Automotive Industry. He worked as a Senior Controls Engineer in the Powertrain Controls department at Chrysler Group LLC, Michigan USA. Belal received his PhD degree in Electrical and Computer Engineering – Embedded Systems from Oakland University, MI, USA in 2011. He has taught electrical and computer engineering undergraduate and graduate courses at various universities in the US and Jordan. He has many years of experience in curricula design, pedagogy in higher education and lead several teams at various universities in implementing curricular continuous improvement and attain national and international accreditation. Dr. Sababha has extensive experience in embedded systems design, control algorithm design and software development with applications related to Gasoline Engine Controls and Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs). He is a consultant in the fields of Embedded Systems and UAV design and control for various governmental and commercial firms. His research concentration areas are UAV development and control, Biomedical instrumentation, embedded sensors, embedded RTOS and CAN networks, distributed embedded systems, graceful degradation in embedded systems, rapid prototyping, and machine vision. Dr. Sababha has served in several senior leadership positions as a Dean, Associate Executive Dean, Director and Chairman. He is a Senior Member of IEEE and a member of several national and international professional organizations.

This work presents embedding a design thinking teaching module within an existing engineering und... more This work presents embedding a design thinking teaching module within an existing engineering undergraduate lab course. The lab, which is freshmen level, gradually builds up critical skills beyond the common mathematical and analytical skills. Such skills are becoming mandatory by the fourth industrial revolution and jobs of future skillset. It gradually and solidly introduces design thinking concepts through a number of experiments where students are fully exposed to the stages of design thinking: empathize, define, ideate, prototype and test. Such skills are needed to address problems, common in modern technological advances, which are not well defined and require out of the box innovation. The lab, which was primarily offered on-line due the COVID-19 pandemic, was taken by more than 100 freshmen level students, required a final design project. The student learning outcomes were acquired and analyzed.

Entrepreneurship education has been there for a while in the curriculum of many business related ... more Entrepreneurship education has been there for a while in the curriculum of many business related majors and started getting into engineering curricula in many parts of the world. Entrepreneurial education for engineering graduates is vital as it places the foundation to utilize engineering technical expertise to spinout companies. In some parts of the world, like Jordan for instance, the engineering curriculum is very condensed and regulatory and accreditation bodies mandate a minimum amount of credit hours and technical discipline subjects which results in having students spend around five years to fulfil the graduation requirements. Hence leaving no room for other important subjects like business and entrepreneurship. In this paper, the authors share their experience in proposing a solution to address the lack of entrepreneurial education for engineering students. The proposed solution made entrepreneurship education mandatory through introducing it as a pre-workplacement workshop that is a graduation requirement. The workshop was available to students through two modes. The results illustrate that the proposed solution positively affected the entrepreneurial attitudes, mindset and intentions of engineering students.

Path loss models play an important role in cellular network planning and deployment. This work re... more Path loss models play an important role in cellular network planning and deployment. This work reports on the path loss models accuracy for predicting received signal strength in an urban environment. The path loss is a key factor in coverage analysis and hence model tuning is mandatory for accurate RF planning. Using a large set of field measurements from a commercial LTE 800MHz network with 15MHz channel bandwidth, different propagation models are evaluated and compared for their accuracy in predicting the path loss. The measurements are conducted in Dubai, UAE which offers a unique environment in its construction materials, architecture, topology and vegetation. The goal of sharing our findings is to help improve the accuracy of the models used to depict path loss.

Ensuring healthy conditions require constant monitoring to detect and predict potential road deterioration. This work proposes a low-cost solution that takes advantage of sensory capabilities of smartphones. By recording Gyro rotation sensor data, we show that abnormalities can be detected by calculating the second moment of sensor data. Our work is validated by drive tests that show results are consistent and repeatable. The work also proposed a dynamic time warping technique to measure similarity between drive results and to obtain accurate representation of multiple drives data.

The model concentrates on what the students are able to do after fulfilling their program requirements. Student Learning Outcomes usually cover the needed knowledge areas and the skillset required to be attained by students to meet market-needs. In engineering education, most of the concerned accreditation bodies require to attain a set of student learning outcomes in knowledge areas, design and problem solving related to the academic program in addition to other learning outcomes that cover a set of skills needed to develop the competencies of graduating students to be ready for the jobs of future. The learning outcomes usually do not include an explicit learning outcome that concentrates on the business and entrepreneurial skillset and mindset. Having these in engineering curriculum and its’ learning outcomes is becoming vital in the requirements of the jobs of future and job creation. In this paper, the authors propose an explicit new student learning outcome to be added to existing engineering program leaning outcomes. The proposed outcome helps developing and instilling business and entrepreneurship mindsets in engineering programs’ graduates.

T... more In this paper a model-based embedded systems design laboratory course development is presented. The course is an enhancement over an existing embedded systems laboratory course that uses conventional methods along with low-level and high-level programming languages in designing embedded systems. The proposed laboratory course introduces the concepts of model-based design, rapid prototyping, and auto-code generation to junior students of an undergraduate electrical engineering program. The students are exposed to model-based development and design through using MATLAB® Simulink®. The graphical environment of Simulink® allows students to easily design and implement embedded software and generate code without worrying about the details of conventional coding issues. Moreover, MATLAB® Simulink® allows easy auto-code generation to be executed on a variety of microcontrollers and FPGAs. The developed lab course and its experiments were implemented for two semesters at least. One of them was during the COVID-19 shutdown and thus the lab was conducted by students at home. The students’ feedback is promising and shows that the lab has helped attain more skills needed by the industry in addition to acquiring a new knowledge area that was not covered by the conventional curriculum.

Autonomous vehicles typically use LiDAR, Radar, and computer vision to substitute for the driver’s vision. By adding auditory perception, an autonomous vehicle will improve its reliability and enable the vehicle to react better to the environment.This paper proposes a novel approach to enhance the reliability of autonomous vehicles. By adding auditory perception, the vehicle will be able to hear and process audio. To illustrate the advantage of auditory capability, we conducted an experiment to collect and process audio signals obtained from a vehicle driving on the road. We showed how an audio signal can be processed to obtain extra information that can alert the vehicle to potential dangers.

These markers are currently passive and work by causing vehicle to vibrate, alerting drivers to pay attention to the road and road signs. In this work, we propose encoding the markers so that a message can be exchanged to help drivers and enhance autonomous vehicle performance. The instants vibrations occur can carry information that can be used by the vehicle. This information can be a warning message or information about the location. The proposed solution can be used by autonomous vehicles or ordinary vehicles equipped with motion sensing capabilities. Utilizing motion gyroscopic sensors, we illustrate how a message can be transferred and decoded from these markers.
