Areas with rain forests have been reduced dramatically by the creation of palm oil plantations, rivers contaminated by mining activities, and the air pollution in the cities is among the highest worldwide. Environmental civil society organizations, but also the national media should have the task to report critically and to inform the general public about environmental destruction and pollution. In practice, however, Indonesian media representatives are often intimidated, and critical voices suppressed not only by private business interests but also by state actors, such as politicians, army, and police personnel. This article will thus critically analyze the possibilities and limits of current Indonesian media when exposing and covering environmental scandals.

Based on a thorough and critical literature review the authors discuss first Mahathir's reaction to the financial crisis in 1997/98 and the upcoming reformasi movement. Then, they analyse the conditions for the re-emergence of Mahathir as opposition leader in mid-2010s and his role in the surprising election victory of the Pakatan Harapan coalition in 2018. Mahathir, charismatic leader in Malaysia during the 1980s and 1990s, has contributed important role in development and change of politics in Malaysia. The victory of the opposition coalition in the 2018 election would be hardly possible without him. His political comeback prior to the election made headlines in Malaysian media and raised high hopes for a more democratic Malaysia.

Malaysia’s approach to regionalism and community building, however, has not received enough analytical attention. The study of Malaysian regionalism is important, in part, because over recent years we have seen an increasingly fluid and multiplex Asian region - in which not only major powers but also smaller states can be influential. In this developing situation, it is becoming urgent to understand non- Western thinking about international relations not only in China, the United States and India but also in individual Southeast Asian states such as Malaysia.. This essay collection examines a range of Malaysian perspectives on regional institutions and regional community building. It identifies Malaysian aspirations and anxieties, as well as elements of a particular Malaysian regionalist style. It notes too the recurring problem of how to balance regional against more narrowly national objectives.

The Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) offers a useful platform to test if trade liberalization has been accompanied by income convergence since the grouping have been among the most aggressive in promoting the removal of trade restrictions in the world. Owing to data limitations involving Brunei and the transition economies of Cambodia, Laos, Myanmar and Vietnam, the assessment is confined to the founding members, namely, Indonesia, Malaysia, the Philippines, Singapore, and Thailand. The current paper tested the income convergence hypothesis by deploying some innovative and powerful unit root tests, such as the Fourier augmented Dickey–Fuller (FADF) and the Fourier ADF with structural breaks (FADF–SB) methods. However, the results show a positive causal relationship with 10% of the two-country pairings. Sixty percent of ...

STD are among the most widespread diseases in the world and have the highest prevalence in Sub-Saharan Africa. The current study explored the associations between the allocation of the development assistance for health (DAH) in 54 African countries and key development indicators – STD incidence, Gross Domestic Product per capita, health expenditure, and life expectancy at birth. It employed descriptive statistical methods, the matrix scatter plot analysis and the Pearson correlation test for this purpose. The findings indicated that there was a considerable increase in the volume of the DAH given to control and prevent STD in Africa over the period of 2002–2011. A statistically significant positive association was detected between the STD incidence and the health aid allocations. At the same time, the imbalan...

Both countries, however, are not yet prepared well for this major demographic change and have only adopted few policies with regard to an ageing society. This article explains the features of and the reasons for the demographic changes in Indonesia and Malaysia before it will analyse the main policy challenges in a comparative perspective

I will specifically focus on the challenges which have arisen in relation to the pension system, the labour market, the migration movements, the urbanisation as well as the consequences of demographic change in different regions and among different ethnic/religious groups in the respective countries.

Indonesian presidents tend to form oversized government coalitions with as many parliamentary factions as possible. In addition, the legislation process is based on consensus, not only between the executive and the legislative branches, but also between the party factions in parliament. The positive effect of forming a coalition government which can cobble together a legislative majority for the minority president to maintain party unity trumps the other institutional influences of weakening party cohesion.
