The development of a typology of the Greek small-scale fishermen, based on socio-economic and fisheries information was examined using data from 551 fishermen interviews in 18 prefectures of Greece. The fishermen are relatively aged, they have mostly attained elementary education and their annual income is low. The catch is traded in both the wholesale and the retail market. The income from fisheries is significantly higher in continental than insular prefectures and higher in the Aegean than the Ionian Sea. The fishermen were categorised in three groups of dependence on fisheries (high, medium and low) according to the percentage of income originating from fishing, with more than 60% of the fishermen belonging to the high dependence group. There were significant differences among these groups in the fishermen age, annual income from fisheries, vessel length and the yearly days of fishing activity. The nature of the fishing licensing system and its implications for management are discussed and also compared to other European and Mediterranean countries. The individual treatment of the identified groups in the licensing procedure is discussed with regard to its fisheries and social impact. The pronounced geographic features revealed by the study on the level of dependence on fishing suggest that the regional particularities, linked to ecosystem heterogeneity, should be considered carefully in the management process. r

Given the pivotal role of Platelet-Activating-Factor (PAF) in atherosclerosis and the cardio-protective role of PAF-inhibitors derived from olive pomace, the inclusion of olive pomace in fish feed has been studied for gilthead sea bream (Sparus aurata). The aim of the current research was to elucidate the anti-atherogenic properties of specific HPLC lipid fractions obtained from olive pomace, olive pomace enriched fish feed and fish fed with the olive pomace enriched fish feed, by evaluating their in vitro biological activity against washed rabbit platelets. This in vitro study underlines that olive pomace inclusion in fish feed improves the nutritional value of both fish feed and fish possibly by enriching the marine lipid profile of gilthead sea bream (Sparus aurata) with specific bioactive lipid compounds of plant origin.

Gilthead sea bream (Sparus aurata) is a teleost of considerable economic importance in Southern European aquaculture. The aquaculture industry shows a growing interest in the application of genetic methods that can locate phenotype-genotype associations with high economic impact. Through selective breeding, the aquaculture industry can exploit this information to maximize the financial yield. Here, we present a Genome Wide Association Study (GWAS) of 112 samples belonging to seven different sea bream families collected from a Greek commercial aquaculture company. Through double digest Random Amplified DNA (ddRAD) Sequencing, we generated a per-sample genetic profile consisting of 2,258 highquality Single Nucleotide Polymorphisms (SNPs). These profiles were tested for association with four phenotypes of major financial importance: Fat, Weight, Tag Weight, and the Length to Width ratio. We applied two methods of association analysis. The first is the typical single-SNP to phenotype test, and the second is a feature selection (FS) method through two novel algorithms that are employed for the first time in aquaculture genomics and produce groups with multiple SNPs associated to a phenotype. In total, we identified 9 single SNPs and 6 groups of SNPs associated with weight-related phenotypes (Weight and Tag Weight), 2 groups associated with Fat, and 16 groups associated with the Length to Width ratio. Six identified loci () were present in genes associated with growth in other teleosts or even mammals, such as semaphorin-3A and neurotrophin-3. These loci are strong candidates for future studies that will help us unveil the genetic mechanisms underlying growth and improve the sea bream aquaculture productivity by providing genomic anchors for selection programs.

There is a growing interest in selective breeding in European sea bass (Dicentrarchus labrax), especially regarding family selection based on growth performance. In particular, quantitative trait loci (QTL) identification in sea bass enhances the application of marker-assisted breeding for the genetic improvement of the production traits. The aims of the study were to identify potential QTL affecting stress and immunological indicators, body weight, and mortality after vibriosis injection in sea bass as well as to estimate heritability and genetic/phenotypic correlations for the aforementioned traits. To this end, stress test was performed on 960 offspring and a sub-group of them (420) was selected to explore the mortality after vibrio injection. This study evaluates the genetic diversity of different meagre broodstocks sampled in Greece. A multiplex of twelve microsatellite markers was used to genotype 946 fish from eleven stocks and batches used for broodstock selection, and the genetic data was used to calculate genetic population parameters as well as to investigate the genetic differentiation between stocks. The results from a relatedness analysis were used as the guiding lines for a fine-tuned and overall evaluation of the genetic distance between stocks, and the choice of candidate breeders from some of them. The approach implemented in this study uses well-established population genetics methods to evaluate the selection of breeder candidates in aquaculture commercial conditions utilizing a descriptive genetic data set based on microsatellite analyses, and to outline an efficient methodology for establishing the basis of new breeding schemes.

The objective of this study was to evaluate the effect of harvest practices and slaughter method on stress, quality and shelf life of whole fish (gilthead sea bream, European sea bass and red sea bream) towards the development of a humane slaughter practice. The use of hook and line resulted in significantly lower plasma cortisol and glucose in European sea bass and gilthead sea bream. Water temperature at harvest affected significantly the concentrations of stress indicators (plasma cortisol and glucose), mainly in European sea bass and gilthead sea bream. No significant differences were observed between the harvesting methods, regarding fish appearance, microbial spoilage and sensory scoring and subsequently shelf life. However, significantly lower hardness was recorded in fish harvested using the electric stunner, compared to the fish killed with slurry ice of the same harvesting period. Shelf life ranged between 13-18 days for gilthead seabream, 10-16 days for European sea bass and 10-14 days for red sea bream, depending on harvesting period.

Mussel aquaculture is being conducted for more than 50 years in Greece. Lately, production seems to deteriorate both in terms of quality and quantity, thus negatively affecting economic output. On top, there also exist some evidence of environmental degradation at least at the wider production area at northern Greece. Nevertheless there is only few research available on the costs and the profitability of the sector. The structure of the sector, which consists mainly of micro and small enterprises does not allow for data collection based on published annual balance sheets. To date, the basic variables available under the EU Data Collection Framework, namely annual production and number of production sites, does not allow for any economic analysis of the sector. Simple Summary In the present study, the genetic architecture of the stress response, body weight, and disease resistance in European seabass were studied, providing fruitful results for further research. Initially, the above traits were recorded and genotyping on a large scale was performed in those fish. The recorded data and genotypes were combined and analyzed to find genomic areas affecting them as well as to estimate the heritability of those traits. Stress response traits and body weight were medium heritable, while genomic regions affecting them were detected. However, no genomic areas related to disease resistance were revealed. These findings improve our knowledge of the genetic structure of those traits and can be utilized in a breeding program for the genetic improvement of aquaculture broodstocks. Ensuring the humane harvest of farmed fish without compromising the quality of the fresh product is paramount to the welfare of fish and in meeting consumer demands. Electrical stunning is a quick and effective way to render fish unconscious and it has emerged as the suggested harvest method by EFSA and OIE. The present study evaluated the effects of electrical stunning on the biochemical processes that lead to fillet degradation postmortem, in the red seabream (Pagrus major). Two distinct electrical stunning conditions (low and high) were compared along with the conventional harvest method (an ice slurry). The activity patterns of calpain, collagenase, and cathepsin B and L were assessed and compared to stereological changes in white muscles at different time points up to 13 days post-harvest. The implementation and use of Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) systems raise fundamental questions about the role of management accountants in an organisation. The case studied here, involving an attempt to establish an ERP system in an organisation funded by both the European Union (EU) and the Egyptian government, is an exploration of conflicting beliefs about the role of management accountants. Elements of strong structuration theory (a reinforced version of Giddens’ structuration theory) are used to analyse how the contest over the role of the management accountant in a new organisation was played out during the partially successful attempt to establish ERP in conjunction with a system that was felt to better support the requirements of the EU for performance-based budgeting. Despite the forward-looking dispositions of key actors within the organisation and from the EU, the role of the management accountant here became compressed to the traditional one of cost information collector and provider.

Purpose: The aim of this paper is to present a reinforced version of structuration theory, known as strong structuration theory, set out in Stones (2005) as a disciplined 2 approach to qualitative case study research in organization, management and accounting fields. This framework challenges the belief held by certain critics that structuration theory cannot be used in substantive empirical research but is only a sensitising device or analytical tool.

In modern capitalism purchase and sale of manufactured foods is as fundamental to social existence as the exchange of a whole gamut of other commodities' [Giddens, A. The constitution of society. US: University of California Press; 1984, p. 259]. Behind the production of food are networks of people, transactions and accounting that have rarely been examined by accounting researchers. The 'agri-food' sector is conflict-ridden and affects all but a very few of the world's population. This paper examines one segment of the industry-the UK-and explores certain elements that impact on the accounting environment of that industry. These are the move towards so-called post-productivist approaches by agricultural businesses and the considerable, yet not always obvious, influence of large agri-food corporations. The shifting asymmetries of power in the sector, which covers farmers, Government and an extensive service sector as well as corporations, are explored using aspects of domination in structuration theory, to elucidate the difficulties faced by farmers that force them to engage with accounting.
