Second, because of the strong sense of community that led the designers to establish a mutual connection between the spatial organization of the complex and a set of mutually shared values, partly inspired by post-WWii social catholicism. Third, because of the links existing between this undertaking and the physical and social transformation of the southern expansion neighborhoods of Reggio Emilia. While being an exceptional case study from many points of view, the village also evokes broader patterns of action that have played an important part in the construction of the italian territory.

In spite of the attempts made by architects and planners to precisely and “technically” define the object of the plans, the notion of “historical city centre” remained a vague and ambiguous one. Conflicting images of history, tradition, and centrality shaped the preservation policies, and were in turn reshaped by them. The visual, historical, and political discourse behind the Bologna plans intentionally brought together a multiplicity of local and non-local cultures, resulting in an overall reinvention of both a local identity and an idea of the city of the past.

Danwei—these were urban sectors in China that were characterized by close links between work, residence, and social facilities. They are the material product of socialist city planning and therefore provide an urban experience that forms a stepping stone between the hutongs of the imperial capital and the superblocks of the present-day metropolis. Contrary to the disused industrial sites in western cities that often disrupt the continuity and scale of the urban fabric, the danweis have a much closer relationship to the historical, as well as the contemporary city. In modern-day Beijing, the danweis represent a unique experimental field of urban design. Beijing Danwei looks at the history and future of former danweis and presents exemplary strategies for dealing with industrial heritage. Case studies show the problems that go hand in hand with transformation and present perspectives and potential with regard to usage and the urban regeneration of Beijing.
The publication is the result of a cooperation between Politecnico di Torino and Tsinghua University in Beijing.
