During her time, Queen Mary - the consort of George V, grandmother of the present queen - oversaw a great wealth of jewelry being added to the already brimming royal coffers of the United Kingdom. Both in the collection of "crown jewels", and those held in private possession of the Windsor ladies. Many pieces were new-made, other were redesigns of earlier pieces. And she also purchased important pieces from those royals who had not fared so well…

This month, to mark the 200th anniversary of Prince Albert's birth, more than 17,500 photographs, prints, and official papers relating to Queen Elizabeth's consort are being made available to the public online by the Royal Collection Trust.

In 1857, Queen Victoria posed for the first royal photo ever, and the world promptly fell in love with photographing royals. Here are some of the more memorable, yet less widely seen, photos of the royal family throughout the years.

Among the images are Edward VII in 1902, the Queen and Prince Philip with baby Anne in 1950, and Queen Victoria in 1887 - all colourised by Nicola Branson, 47, from Northamptonshire.
