Green Lacewing Larvae

The Lacewing Larvae, called "Aphid Lions", are important biological control agents against many soft-bodied insects including aphids and mites. Other things the lacewing larvae feed on include insect eggs, thrips, whiteflies, mealybugs, small caterpillars and beetle larvae.

Lime Butterfly Caterpillar

The Lime Butterfly caterpillar passes through 5 different instars before pupation. The first few instars of the caterpillar look like bird droppings and this is nature's way of protecting them from predators. In the 5th (last) instar, the caterpillar becomes pale green with a yellow subspiracular band having brown and bluish marking and a pair of false eyes. An additional yellow band is developed on the 4th and 5th segments with bluish spots on it.

Common Leopard Butterfly Larvae

The common leopard butterfly caterpillar has a dark orange color with black and white spots. The color turns paler as the caterpillar mature and finally becomes green. It's black colored sharp branched spines with yellowish spot at the base of each spine. The caterpillar main food plants are willow trees (family: Salicaceae).

Plain Tiger Larvae

Plain Tiger Butterfly Larva (caterpillar) can be easily found on the host plants (milkweed). Its body has black and white bands with yellow dorsolateral spots. It has 3 pairs of long and black tentacle-like appendages. The bases of appendages turn red as the caterpillars become mature. The period required for larva to pupate is about 2 weeks.

Praying Mantis Larvae

I have kept some praying mantis egg pods on the hope that some babies praying mantis will come out from them in the spring or early summer. So I decided to cut one of them to see praying mantis larvae. I took some photos to serve my visitors, who often visit my blog to see praying mantis larvae. Actually these are undeveloped nymphs.

Ladybug Larvae

Like ladybugs, their larvae are also beneficial as they feed primarily on aphids. Here are some pictures of 7 spotted ladybug larvae taken at different stages.
