Language and Product Localization Technical Support Work stream; working closely with language communities where timely interventions and engagements to resolve technical requests that are relevant to keep them moving to achieve their goals. More about this work
- Technical Support for existing and New Languages structured approach to respond to internationalisation and localisation issues, support technical follow through, and accountability of deliverables and visible impact. Requests are usually lightweight and rarely require implementing a new feature.
a) Adding new languages to the configuration

b) Helping resolve core language-related engineering issues concerning internationalization, localization, translation, MediaWiki namespace including;
- Various minor fixes in source English-language messages in core MediaWiki, extensions, and mobile apps in their respective Gerrit and GitHub repos. Fixes, such as: documentation, spelling, style, consistency with other messages, grammar, clarity, correct usage of GENDER and PLURAL, etc.
- translatewiki configuration : adding or removing optional and ignored messages, maintaining the list of the most used MediaWiki messages, removing discontinued MediaWiki extensions, organizing groups of MediaWiki extensions (main, advanced, media, fundraising, technical, legacy, etc.), etc.
- RTL (right to left) languages fixes.
- New input methods for languages that don't have good keyboard support in desktop operating systems, or fixes in existing methods.
- Other languages configuration: namespace name translation, date formats, special page alias translation, etc.
- Volunteer Engagement for Technical support additional tasks for this board include those related to technical engagement for language communities where we are constantly exploring meaningful collaboration and engagement opportunities for language communities for example Language Community meetings, exploring new ways to engage volunteer developers in contributing to technical requests etc.
Task prioritization: On this workboard, tasks are:
- Related to Language and Product Localization areas listed above. Tasks rarely require implementing a new feature, as that may fall under the LPL Hypothesis or LPL Essential
- Gathered from other language and product localisation -specific project components on Phabricator (e.g MediaWiki-Internationalization, RTL, I18n, WikimediaMessages, MediaWiki-General, translatewiki.net, UniversalLanguageSelector, Language codes, Jquery.ime, etc.), talk pages (e.g., Support page on Translatewiki.net), Telegram channels, and triaged on a first-come, first-serve basis.
- Related to projects under the maintenance responsibilities by the Language and Product Localization
- Good for newcomers, tagged as good first task related to adding/modifying translation messages, spelling/grammar checks, etc.
